I am also very disappointed by it, but hopefully the new system will allow modders to "cheat in" a tech tree by going nuts with dependencies. Probably as good as it gets for us.

That's not a viable position.

If a game requires modding to make it *playable* or *enjoyable*, then it rightfully deserves to get punished at release by reviews.

Endless Legend's tech system worked for Endless Legend, it clearly does -not- work for Endless Space 2.

The simple question I can put to anyone in this thread, and indeed to Amplitude - Would Endless Space, the very first one, work with an Era tech system? Or would it break the game?

I think the answer is self evident, and I think the answer is becoming clear with the efforts to try and ram this "Square peg/round hole" solution in the sequel.

Or maybe what they end up doing with the tech system will actually be good even if it is not a full tree. I for one am exited to see what they have in store for us in the next iteration. I reserve my judgment for when I actually see what this next iteration is. Making it to a black and white , tree vs era problem and saying one is bad therefor they must be going with the other is oversimplifying the options the developers have.

Oh that I agree with. There's plenty of *better* options available, but the Era system is most definitely the worst option as it stands.

And I agree, but it doesn't change the fact they've already said they will not cater to the original fans. If you and I want the game you and I want, we're going to have to roll up our sleeves after release and fix it ourselves. There's no point in lamenting the decision now, it will accomplish nothing.

While I admire your hope, I cannot help feel it is misplaced. We didn't need to hope for a good system for Endless Space 2, the first game already had a great one. I agree with the assessment that until the game is released, there's no way to know how it will play, but that's not to say we don't already have an indicator about the tech system itself. In a different manner of speaking: If Ford showed off the new Mustang, but it had the most practical square body, we might not know how the rest of the vehicle was, and how that body impacts the rest of the decisions, until the car itself is actually made. But it doesn't change the fact that the body is a genuine letdown compared to prior examples.

I also agree with your assessment that things don't have to be binary between tree and era. But both the original release, as well as the update, have shown that the system is definitely leaning far more to the latter, rather than the former. As fans of the original game, it stings to have such a core component snatched away inexplicably.

There's nothing inexplicable about the decision, they're using Endless Legend as spackle.
