Faction Creation Contest | Game Design

Reply

Hey guys and gals!

Thanks to all of you who participated, voted, or both! The Endless Space 2 Faction Creation attracted 185 submissions! There were some hiccups along the way, so we tried to find a compromise that would be the fairest to all participants. To that end, we selected the top twelve most popular entries, instead of the usual three. We know this doesn't solve all issues that were brought up, but we hope this alleviates them. Moving forward, we'll be proceeding a little differently to make sure that everybody gets a fair chance.

Without further ado, here are the most popular Major Faction designs! Click on the entries for a link to the submission threads proper, to check out what their gameplay entails! Click the  icon to vote for a submission!

PLEASE NOTE THAT AT THIS STEP YOU CAN ONLY VOTE FOR ONE SUBMISSION AND CANNOT REALLOCATE YOUR VOTE!

Wow. This almost reached American politics levels.  So much controversy in this vote, it almost feels like a farce.  As entertaining as it is to me, I kinda feel sorry for the devs that have to deal with it
Other than that, I quite enjoyed the competition. Maybe next time, I'll submit something myself, just for the fun of it if nothing else.

Posting a submission and trailing behind in the votes can be quite an emotional rollercoaster, so I'm not too shocked that people are acting questionably around it. I've certainly felt tempted to spam forums or find fault with the entries more popular than my own. I've accepted that I'm probably not going to win this competition at this point, though. I'm not 100 percent sure how the top entrants got so popular, and certainly don't want to make any cynical assumptions. I am certainly open to advice from them so I can do better in the future.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it might have been better to have one more vote after this one amongst the top 3 winners. It might have helped things out a bit... maybe

I'm not sure. The 4 highest from round one are now the 4 highest in round two, and so far in the same order no less. We all gotta admit, the Unfallen are on top for a reason: they would be awesome in this game! The people have spoken.

I've also finally placed my vote after reading the choices on the first day, sitting on it and deciding which faction I would have most fun playing.

I'd like to think that the antics of some of the members didn't persuade my choice but I am glad that I waited this late to vote just incase I regretted my decision. EndlessCrashes behaviour has been disappointing, I don't mind asking for votes but he messaged me more than once even after I said I'd vote and he has acted way to rash towards some of the other competition. EndlessCrashes, you need to calm down a lot. You have a great idea and even if it doesn't win at least you submitted something and gave us all an interesting idea for a new faction. Maybe even the devs will integrate the idea into a different faction later or maybe we'll have another vote later for DLC and such.  Please just tone it down. WE are all fans of the game and want to see it become the best it can be.

I love all 12 submissions and would love if the devs gave us a in depth modding kit so that the other submission could get modded in a some point or another voting session later on down the line. I want to thank all the finalist for making it a hard choice and coming up with great ideas. I hope losing wont put them off trying again in the future because there is some very creative stuff here. I might even give it ago next time. Let's hope all the other g2g votes will be this difficult in the future.

It's disappointing to read this. Sure, I've advertised my faction on other forums and through my friends, but I never harassed anyone anywhere and certainly didn't PM people on these forums asking for a vote.

I wish we could restart this whole thing and change the rules to prohibit this sort of behavior. I wouldn't even mind prohibiting outside advertisement. I just feel like a lot of this has soured the community a bit and that's the last thing I wanted for it.

Although when I seen that message which you said "Your Dead to me" to someone on that steam page, I laughed, as most people should have. Its just banter and nothing more.

Oh aye, you could twist it that way.

But if people cannot tell if we are joking without stupid emojis or "kappa" at the end then... Endless take me.

Well I have to be careful in my wording here.  I don't want to get banned so I'll try not to drum up any more drama.

I have not harassed anyone with my promotions.  If people didn't want to talk to me, I didn't push it.  I feel I am being personally attacked for getting the word out about the contest.   For every one person here that complained about me on this thread, there were probably 20 that I talked to that has pleasant conversations with me, weren't annoyed, and were treated with respect even if they didn't vote for me.  Many are now friends who I am sure will play some Endless games with me in the future.  It would be nice if some were here to defend how I approached my advertising.   I would like to point out that the contest seemed to be under promoted, and a large number of people I spoke to had no clue there was a competition or that ES2 was even coming out for early access soon.  I have raised a lot of awareness resulting in lots of free promotion for the game itself.  And my 2nd place vote score proves that a majority of people do want to see unique factions in the game, that introduce creative new ideas not seen before in the first ES.

I explained that I misunderstood the post.  I've apologized.  Why keep dragging me through the mud about it?  It is being insinuated that I am a dummy for not recognizing the humor.  It is being said that I have soured the whole experience here.  This overreaction is equal to my misunderstanding.  I just want to remind everyone that the contest experience was already soured in the minds of many people before my antics, as were detailed in the highly popular complaint thread we made.

So if Sorry Cat didn't express it enough, I'm sorry.  If anyone has any more remarks about me, please message me here or on Steam and let's talk it out.  I'd rather defend myself privately than risk getting banned here.  I hope I haven't offended anyone further.  That's all I'll be posting in this thread, thanks for hearing me out.

We're now 30 mins away from the end of Phase 1. If there are still people who haven't voted yet, now would be the time.

Look, its absolutely fine. You have the freedom to speak your mind and defend yourself here so long, as it is most reasonable to assume, we treat each other with respect here on the forums as most of us on the forums are here because of our support for Amplitude in some regard.

This, totally stupid view that the forums have turned into "American politics levels" is rather wrong. All it has been is a bit of a misunderstanding between some members with Devildog regarding self promotion then it was immediately sorted within a day.

Taking a revote was a good choice with better ruling on the vote, we already see a different pattern and closeness between certain choices; our dispute however was with the competition rulings and hopefully, come the next competition, we will see a more rounded and fair system next time.

When ES2 comes out, I'll probably end up playing with you anyway so no worries.

Congrats to DevilDog and the Unfallen! For those who are curious, I tracked the top votes over time, and here are the top 3. There were period where each of us was in the lead (in the first day), but the Unfallen quickly gained prominence, and kept it throughout.

Great stuff everyone! I had lots of fun reading all the entries and inventing my own. Can't wait for phase 2 (I'll leave this to the experts), and phase 3 for my own contribution.
