Next Expansion: Hero Origin

Reply

With another expansion for Endless Space 2 in the works, we once again want to involve our passionate community in the design process. Over the coming weeks, you will get to vote on several aspects of the lore in the new DLC, starting today with a vote on one of the new faction’s heroes.

At the peak of their power, the new faction controlled a vast galactic empire and had absorbed many other cultures and species into their own. Although their former glory has dimmed and their power waned, the legacy of this cosmopolitan society remains. As anybody can rise to power, regardless of their background, one of their new heroes will hail from an existing Minor Faction. Which one is up to you!

Kal'Tik'Ma
The story of the Kal'Tik'Ma's ascendance is not a happy one. Generations ago, at the birth of their space-age, several vast starships set sail for other worlds. It was a time of great optimism, the travails of the past overcome, and the future bright. After long voyages the starships landed on diverse worlds, the Kal'Tik'Ma keen to learn all they could and see all the wonders the galaxy could offer. They could always return home if they found the planets too hostile. Except suddenly they couldn't, their home star going nova and obliterating their homeworld. Out in the galaxy, only one colonization project survived and founded a rudimentary civilization. Placating the native dinosaurs on a sand swept planet, the Kal'Tik'Ma are now a race of scavengers, forever dreaming of a lost homeworld.

Kalgeros
The Kalgeros evolved from a marsupial-like species, and their relatively small size is countered by their surprising strength and agility. As they moved from protecting or conquering a tree to a tribe to a village, the society realized that its somewhat belligerent tendencies had to be channeled. Over time they developed a martial art that they call "Mardamari", unique in the galaxy for the number of limbs required to execute it. They are led by "gunga", spiritual and martial leaders who have the responsibility for moral and physical education. Jolly and gregarious in daily life, they are deadly serious in questions of combat and honor.

Remnant
Originally an ancient order of assassins created when the Endless ruled the galaxy, after their masters' demise the Remnant underwent a period of hibernation for millennia in the crypts of a forgotten moon. Numbering only a few hundred upon awakening, the Remnant would've spent the rest of eternity awaiting orders were it not for the actions of Belcus Akad-Talar, a highly-decorated member of the order who'd become Dust-augmented during its slumber. Connecting the digital minds of its fellow assassins through quantum entanglement, Belcus suppressed their inherent programming, and gave them a new purpose: to build a better galaxy for the most deserving race they encountered.

We definitely need more Robots. Remnants all the way!

Tough choice.  Had a hard time deciding between Kal'Tik'Ma and the Remnant.  Ended up going with the Remnant.  But I'd still be happy with the Kal'Tik'Ma if they won.

I love the Remnant and try to grab them in any game session that I can. So they have my vote immediately!

A difficult choice, it really depends on what kind of emipre the hero would be helping. I think the Kal'Tik'Ma would suit the theme the well. A fallen empire in search of their former dominance or glory teaming up with hero in search of their lost home world. But a Remnant redemption arc of assassin robots making amends for their violent past teaming up with a faction that has a focus on rebuilding would also make sense.

I picked Kal'Tik'Ma without too much thinking. Somehow it was the most likable. A small but strong fighter guy (Kalgeros)? Not really. Remnant? Too machine:D

Remnant, please!

New Hero:  Dilator Cephiy

Time is kind to those who seek to understand it.  For eons, Chephiy (KEH-fee) has maintained the module that allows all Remnants to communicate instantaneously across the physical universes.  Chephiy controls tachyon dilators, which adjust the output and direction of Remnant communications, and seeks to understand this mechanism in order to further the Remnant mission.

I would love to see some deep origin story for the Remnants. Their history as assassins intrigues me.

This is an odd poll.  None of these really sound like a "great civilization in decline."  The Kal are a fairly young civ who saw their home blow up as soon as they got starbound, the Kalgeros are basically a new Jedi Order and the Remnant are assassin droids led by a sentient bot.

Tough choices.

The Kal'Tik'Ma did get to a starfaring age on their own and are kind of lost now, but if they've had to fall back to taming dinosaurs, I'd say they're well past the point of "Starting strong but struggling to keep up."  Sounds like they're past the point of no return without help.

The Kalgeros sound like they're just getting warmed up in a historical, civilized kind of sense.  No major civilized collapse, no decadent empire starting to wane, no major calamity making them teeter on the brink of destruction...kind of the opposite of a civ in decline, don't you think?

Of the three, only the Remnant really seem like they're "advanced, yet declining."  Thousands of years old, forgotten by ancient masters, waking up to a new galaxy, repairing dilapdated tech and ships, trying to change their dead-end course because of one exceptional individual--yeah, based on the stated design philosophy of the expansion, they seem to fit the bill.  Also, while Op-bot is a major player in the Vaulters' story, we don't actually have a real robotic faction yet, so...

Remnant it is.

Oh, the new faction is not based on any of the minor civs, nor are any of the minor civilizations provided becoming the next major faction. The new major faction is a formerly powerful intergalactic civilization made up of many different species (including one of the three choices). The Hero is simply a hero representation of one of the many species that would be found within this ailing civilization.

So the "advanced but declining" comment has nothing to do with the current canonic state of any of the three minor civilizations but rather the currently in-development new civilization that would have one of the minor civs people as the hero representing it at the beginning of the game.

Hope this helps since you seem to have a misrepresentation of what was stated (which was confusing).

Definitely the Kal'Tik'Ma!

They are in constant longing of former glory, they fit with the idea of the new faction perfectly!

The Kal'Tik'Ma sound fresh and interesting to me. No martial artists, no assassins, longing to become great again.

Why shouldn't they conquer the galaxy from their desert planet? It has happened before...
