Next Expansion: Hero Origin

Reply

With another expansion for Endless Space 2 in the works, we once again want to involve our passionate community in the design process. Over the coming weeks, you will get to vote on several aspects of the lore in the new DLC, starting today with a vote on one of the new faction’s heroes.

At the peak of their power, the new faction controlled a vast galactic empire and had absorbed many other cultures and species into their own. Although their former glory has dimmed and their power waned, the legacy of this cosmopolitan society remains. As anybody can rise to power, regardless of their background, one of their new heroes will hail from an existing Minor Faction. Which one is up to you!

Kal'Tik'Ma
The story of the Kal'Tik'Ma's ascendance is not a happy one. Generations ago, at the birth of their space-age, several vast starships set sail for other worlds. It was a time of great optimism, the travails of the past overcome, and the future bright. After long voyages the starships landed on diverse worlds, the Kal'Tik'Ma keen to learn all they could and see all the wonders the galaxy could offer. They could always return home if they found the planets too hostile. Except suddenly they couldn't, their home star going nova and obliterating their homeworld. Out in the galaxy, only one colonization project survived and founded a rudimentary civilization. Placating the native dinosaurs on a sand swept planet, the Kal'Tik'Ma are now a race of scavengers, forever dreaming of a lost homeworld.

Kalgeros
The Kalgeros evolved from a marsupial-like species, and their relatively small size is countered by their surprising strength and agility. As they moved from protecting or conquering a tree to a tribe to a village, the society realized that its somewhat belligerent tendencies had to be channeled. Over time they developed a martial art that they call "Mardamari", unique in the galaxy for the number of limbs required to execute it. They are led by "gunga", spiritual and martial leaders who have the responsibility for moral and physical education. Jolly and gregarious in daily life, they are deadly serious in questions of combat and honor.

Remnant
Originally an ancient order of assassins created when the Endless ruled the galaxy, after their masters' demise the Remnant underwent a period of hibernation for millennia in the crypts of a forgotten moon. Numbering only a few hundred upon awakening, the Remnant would've spent the rest of eternity awaiting orders were it not for the actions of Belcus Akad-Talar, a highly-decorated member of the order who'd become Dust-augmented during its slumber. Connecting the digital minds of its fellow assassins through quantum entanglement, Belcus suppressed their inherent programming, and gave them a new purpose: to build a better galaxy for the most deserving race they encountered.

Personally I want Sowers back. We still need a true robot faction and also more religious ones.
But my vote would go to the Remnants.

Kalgeros. I always love Kalgeros. I always keep approval one of my top priorities whatever the match (hence I hated playing the Harmony in ES) and the Kalgeros are cute fuzzy helpers in that regard. I always try to find cozy fertile planets for them.

That's very sweet of you :3

voted remnant, seems the best fit. "serve the most deserving race they encounter"

I vote remnant, would be great if the hero was one of those responsible for the fall (decline) of the empire, and now wishes to atone for past sins by restoring them to their former glory.

I voted Remnant because their backstory sounds the most interesting and mystical. Should be interesting to mix them up with the new faction. Kal'Tik'Ma come to a close second for me for similiar reasons.

Kal'Tik'Ma sounds like the best choice for me, mainly because I prefer both Kalgeros and Remnants to be their own thing. Kal'Tic Tac origin sounds like a best bet for portion of them having a romance with a major faction without clashing with their uniqueness.

I personally voted for Remnants. It would be neat to see a robotic faction at play, like the Automatons. Hopefully, the Remnants can be 'the isolationist' faction.

Are we only voting for a hero background or will this tie into the votes for a new faction?

It's possible that the backstory for the hero we vote on will reveal* a bit more about the New Faction's history and how they "fell from grace" so to speak.  Which means that depending on the Minor Faction we choose, the story will be told from the unique perspective of their own faction's backstory, which may reveal* something different then the other perspectives would have.

Which is why I voted Kal'Tik'Ma due to them and the new faction both striving to return to former glory!

*I mean 'reveal' in a general sense -for us to enjoy lore- not as in getting something ahead of schedule.

It makes me think Remnant could be a great fit too if the story is told right!  I'm sure they could come up with something for the Kalgeros, but it just isn't intriguing to me.

I voted Remnant because I just love robot factions, their history and story, and most of all how they're builders.

Edit: It just occured to me the Remnant hero, assuming the Remnant win, could be the Gunfather, now that's an exciting idea.

Hard choice, but I went for Kal'Tik'Ma. I like their dinosaur tamers trope. It also fits the "ancient" nature of the yet unrevealed new faction. It would be cool to see the new faction as having to do something with dinos, being dinosaur tamers for instance, and Kal'Tiks using this knowledge in their colony. If I recall Amplitude didn't tackle the dinosaur theme so far. Sure there were reptiles here and there plus we have Drakken in Endless Legend (love them!), but space dinos? Count me in! Or it might be something like the Amazons from the upcoming AoW: Planetfall: - a researcher faction with a strong affinity for bio-engineering.

I don't know about the importance of the minor faction will have in the "ancients" faction, but if those can be seen as reference, then I'm all-in for the Kal'Tik. Remnants are strong candidates, but a robot assasin faction? I know Endless Space had a robotic faction, yet robots in space feels kinda overused already. Kalgeros? As far as "martial arts" factions we already have Hissho as a faction and Yuusho as minor.

Btw it will be interesting to see this unique take on 4X games. A decline mechanic perhaps?

I think the Kalgeros are definitely the most deserving. The fact that they run the tutorial and don't have a faction yet is a travesty!

i'm hoping that whichever of kal'tik'ma and remnants doesn't get picked for a starting hero still has a hero for this faction
