I am well into my first play of the expansion and i'm wondering with the new ground defence and troop system it's actually killing their ability to invade your empire and be any threat apart from fleet battles..Has the A.I ever dropped troops in your game?

Yeah, I've had troops drop in a few times now. Always really annoying.

Yes, but generally not to their full potential. Just a few soldiers, enough to take one system in a war. They also send their soldiers in un-protected, so having some mediocre fleets protecting each of your systems can completely counter AI soldiers. Now that is what I find annoying, that the AI is too stupid to use them right.

Yes, the AI does indeed use troops. Usually does not attempt to capture a system in one turn though. Usually, they have so few troops aboard their troopships that it takes 10 turns or more to capture your system, so that you either have time to send ships for a neighboring system or buy defense ships in system to stop them.
