The AIs all hate me

I'm playing on Hard, and I expanded rather quickly in the early game.

I managed to get peace with 2 races, but after a little while both declared war on me cause of my score...

I didn't research much in the trade/diplomacy tree until maybe turn 60, so I was late in requesting peace.

Is there any point in trying to be diplomatic? Will they always turn on me?

Or is it that I waited so long and didn't build up positive relations by having peace for a while, so no one was willing to stay at peace with me when my score rose much higher than theirs?

(If the former, any point in not taking the always-at-war trait and getting a few more bonuses?)

Ususally AI's focus on trying to take out the player in first. Kinda like mario kart and the stupid blue shells.

The ai also don't like it when you block them off or take systems near them. Eternal war trait has advantages and disadvantages. Eternal war means you cannot use trade routes, trade for dust, science, resources, and blocks you from positive diplomatic bonuses like the ones used by amoeba.

The AIs usually go for the neighbour with the weakest military.

AIs you have no borders with usually make for good trading partners.

I use diplomacy early on to keep the enem… er, AI at the gates. Once I feel ready, I use gunship diplomacy to speak with them. I basically ignore all attempts at diplomacy and just clean the universe of alien filth.

Exactly how I do it. Pretend to be there allies, then stab them in the back smiley: smile

I'd say, yes, they'll turn on you if they seem to have a chance. I'm not sure what the math is, but the AI does like to break treaties, even to their own detriment.

It's still good to have diplomacy to temporarily stop a barrage until you can respond properly. If I'm being hammered, I'll offer peace and the AI almost invariably agrees to it. That gives me 20 turns to build a response. After the time runs out, they'll typically ask for long term peace and when rejected, they'll re-declare war after a few turns. By that time, you should have been able to build an appropriate response to their threat.

I wish the games' diplomacy was better to prevent this kind of exploit.

I wouldn't call that an exploit since it's not that powerful. It's also just part of the game. However, when I ask for peace and they give me 20 turns to turn my war machine against them when I was losing in the first place? Well, that could be an exploit.

There are quite a few little tricks that I'm sure we all use on the higher difficulty levels. You can be assured that the AI uses whatever advantage it thinks it can come up with too. Humans will always have the advantage of flexibility that a rules based program can't match.

That's a life hack right there, not an exploitation or weakness in the game. The weakness is that this is one of the only viable strategies with the horrible diplomacy A.I. The A.I. will stab you 100 times in the back, front, side and your eye given half a chance. Why not do the same to them?
