Ship Targeting Question

I'm playing the base game and have been wondering about targeting.

I've noticed that missiles seem to fire once per phase and kinetics and beams a couple of times. So my question is, if one of your ships kills a target with it's first kinetic or beam salvo... does it then switch target to another ship?

Obviously with missiles it's a one shot deal, but I didn't know whether that is the case with the other two.

Yes, they do. You can verify this by using "nosebreaker" and watching the battle. All ships will fire on one target and when it's gone, they'll switch to the next one during the same phase.

i don't think the targeting system is part of the base game, unless they updated it after disharmony.

You are correct. I'm so used to seeing the term "vanilla" that I didn't even notice "base game". I only played vanilla once to help someone else troubleshoot a problem and targeting wasn't an option, even after the update. I went back to Disharmony when I couldn't duplicate his issue.
