This is a bit of a thread necro, but with this game in my Steam library and no way I'll go back to Windows in the future, I'm hoping that the team get a SteamOS/Linux release out eventually. Given there is a Mac release, there is that extra ray of hope...

Chances of ES getting a port are pretty slim. Amplitude has moved on by now. smiley: smile

Same, I've got the game just sat there in my library and I'm just thinking on playing but I can't switch to windows that often D: And I really like the endless universe and the games. If there was a linux version I would play all day. I gave up on Civ5 cause this is so good, but then again Civ5 was on linux. smiley: frown

You should not presume to speak for Amplitude.

As recently as this month, there is a strong indication that a Linux port is still on the agenda.

Do note that the link you posted refers to dungeon of the endless, not endless space.

Endless Space has been developed on a previous Unity version (3.5.6). A Linux port is quite unlikely to be honest, despite Steam or Unity 4 (at least for now, we don't plan on porting the game). It is unfortunately not a simple update, as it would require lots of dev time and we chose focus on other priorities.

I just can't find proper words to describe how terribly disappointed I currently am at the moment. Though it is a really old post, Linux gaming is still seriously underrated and underestimated by many companies. I really hope the developers will eventually change their minds regarding this issue and choose the right path.

Until then, does anyone know how to run the game currently through Wine? When I attempt to run it it either simply doesn't or get this error.

Whilst I sympathize, I do want to point out that for smaller developers, this may not always be financially viable. At the present, Linux gaming is simply a far smaller market segment than Windows and as such is not always a path said developers can take. This would certainly have been the case when ES1 was being developed.

On the bright side, SteamOS (which is Linux based) is a very positive influence on this segment, so I would expect a sharp increase in Linux compatible games the next few years.

Thanks, this allowed me to launch and play the game. It was one of the easiest games to run with wine so far.

Sometime eventually? Possibly. Right now? I doubt it. As I recall it is pretty heavy on Windows only (microsoft) tech. It would probably require a hefty rewrite and re-design of APIs and such.

It would be a great boon for the playerbase.

But would require quite a lot from both steam and the game itself.

Possibly more than Linux is able to give.

Isn't this based on unity anyway?

AFAIK Unity3D are working towards working in Chrome on linux, and unity already runs under wine so

I agree the work put into developping it for Linux as well would be tremendous but I do think it would be a nice to cross-platform considering new Steam Cloud capabilities.

Unity3D is currently in alpha and will be going into linux with Wasteland 2 (source).

According to dlls in game's folder, interface is QT4 based, which is cross-platform since ever.

So i agree - it won't be at release but maybe sometime in the future...

Moved by DannyD in a better section.

I think is a good idea, but first we must wait Valve.

It already works for me through wine, though with a few problems (can't pan research trees, can't zoom with mousewheel).

Ubuntu 12.04.

I run ES with wine 1.5, that could be an issue, but 1.4 won't work for me for some reason.

My laptop is: Intel i5, GF GT 330M, proprietary nvidia drivers, but I run steam through bumblebee/optirun. I don't think bumblebee is a problem, because someone else had the same problem of not being able to scroll with mousewheel.

Oh, one more thing:

echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

This should make your game work if wine hangs for you. To make the change permanent, change it in /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf. There are some security issues with this, though, as described in that file.

They should definitely try to make a linux version, if not atleast try to make it work well with wine.

I've also got Ubuntu 12.04 but I can't get it to work, i get a popup with "GetThreadContext failed" when I try to start it, even with wine 1.5.
