If not for the class and stats (to not unbalance gameplay as it is that could be randomly generated like "hey a new hero is available, it's an adventurer-commander with X stats, would you like to hire him ? yes, then choose how he will look) at least for the portrait, name (could be a name generator for the faction) and biography (which I would probably leave empty because it's not essential to me).

I love your ideas and I'm of the same mind. I've always been someone who has valued the flavor of a game, as I'm sensitive to peculiarities and my immersion can be spoiled by seemingly simple details.



In the same vein, I am hoping that they add portrait options (preferably many) for your, I suppose, leader. As of now, they only have one for each race.

It's not that easy. It may take more than 250 turns for a planet governor you hired in the first ten turn to rise to max level (20).



Now imagine you hired another governor at turn 200, it probably won't reach max level before turn 400-450 (though I need to check if moving it around to build new colonies speed this up, which is probably the case).



It's easier for fleet admirals, that is for sure since you can do multiple battles in the same turn.

Second, there should be some sort of differentiation in skills between the races. As it is now, it is too easy to level up heroes. If leveling up heroes was a bit harder, foreign heroes could start at level two with a specialty promotion that reflects their race traits...after all, by then heroes would have had time to presumably gather experience in their own culture.

I agree with only having your race's heroes at the start. I do think preventing you from having other race's heroes if you play the Cravers or Horatio would be kind of detrimental, so it's better if it's just explained away somehow.

I'd be satisfied if the prerequisites for hiring an alien hero were



1) Contact with the race

2) The hero has some reason to be there; i.e. mercenary for hire, supports your cause, etc.

3) We want our own races heroes at the start, with options to get other races heroes as we develop.







Now, thematically... I'm a human ruler of a human empire. I should not have the option of recruiting other aliens heroes if I haven't at least a) met them, b) researched their/a language ability, and c) meet specific requirements per race.



I do however see an issue with having heroes of totalitarian races like Cravers, UNLESS my concerns are explained away (it's your game, your universe, show me why I have them as heroes!)

It does seem rather strange that you can hire aliens from turn one, yet you still get a message that you're not alone when you encounter your first alien civilization.

Precisely. Honestly, there probably shouldn't be heroes not of your race unless the circumstances are extremely special. For the likes of the Cravers, it just shouldn't happen.

I also agree. I enjoy playing the Cravers and while they may take slaves, it really makes no sense to turn those slaves into admirals and governors of extreme power. The same thing applies to the Horatio. If they believe those based on Horatio genetics are superior beings, then they would they elect "inferior" beings to positions of command?

I'm throwing my hat in this ring too, I would like to have restrictions based on whether I've met the race in question yet and whether my race is likely to hire xenos, lorewise.

yeah this is bugging me as well, what does the dust do to them, aside from perhaps making them sneeze?

Is it intended for heroes not of your race to be available for hire? I suppose I can see the Sophon accepting outsiders, but some of these guys strike me as xenophobic.

I think this is a great idea, certainly in the early game you should only have access to Heroes of your own faction..

You are right about that i geuss even there eating habit has their limits. Especialy with something powerfull as a hero.

Agree, but otoh, trying to eat a hero is a bad proposition, they are more than humans... after all they are heroes.

I agree, on start of the game, you should only have native hero's open to you.

Later on, others can come availible.

But I would put one more condition on it, other then contact.

If for instance you are waging a war of genocide upon the Sophons, I imagine that few wil be happy to join you.

Of course there will always be renegades, maybe that can be reflected in recruitment options/backstory.



Having Cravers working for you is slighly weird indeed.

Seeing indeed that their motto is: Not a craver? Must be a resource for expansion then.

I think that non-"native" heroes should be restricted by races encountered. I'm not opposed to having, say, a Craver working for the Terrans... but it seems all the weirder if nobody has ever met a Craver before. I highly doubt the first reaction to a galactic vagrant would be "He must be a hero; put him in a position of power! "

I suppose I'm open to factions employing heroes of other races, but I rather like the conceptual restriction that you must have met that race first before you can have the option of hiring members from that race. I'd also go further and say they ought to give you a stable of heroes of your own race at the beginning and have the generation of foreign heroes be much lower than that of native heroes, to better reflect the rarity and special, extenuating circumstances most likely involved.

But aren't they inspired by some Mass Effect race that goes about assimillating other races, taking over the genetic code they need? Would that be such a stretch for them to have them work for them temporarily? It's been a while and I haven't played the Cravers yet, so I don't fully know their fluff.

as xenophobic as they may be, it's just realpolitik. Soviet Union and USA had no problems employing german scientists that had worked for the nazis.

Why not? In MoO2 you could have Meklar heroes et al. even when not belonging to that race as well. Maybe it'll become a racial trait in a future version, that would be a kind of cool idea. Who strikes you as xenophobic?
