Is it normal for that bar under a system name (the control or combat one) to fill so slowly near the end game?

There's a few systems Ive taken 20 or 30 turns ago whose bars aren't even half full. I've had to leave a fleet behind at each one just so some AI doesn't just zip in and take it back in 2 or 3 turns.

I know its got something to do with invasion recovery and the only building Ive found to speed that up is the bunkers, but even thats barely noticeable. So is there a way to speed that up for populated systems you capture?

If you keep the system happy then it will fill faster.

Also if you build the improvements that help after an invasion it will also fill faster.

As soon as I conquer a world I build infinite supermarkets and colonial rule. That gets the happiness up pretty fast. If you have a huge dust surplus you can do a buyout to get them even faster. I'm not even sure what "invasion recovery" even does; I don't think it relates to happiness. Anybody know?

I do the same. It is a great way to speed up assimilation.

As has been said above, the systems defense will raise slowly while the population is not yet assimilated. Obviously the population would gladly return to its previous owner instead of accepting your rule, so why would they help defend in an invasion? This means you have to defend the system after capturing, which really helps slow down snow balling (at least in theory I believe).
