Which tech tree do you find yourself putting the most time into, especially early game. Myself I seem to put the most into the left and bottom trees. The bonuses to fleet size and movement speeds are amazing. The weapons techs do help, but don't seem to make as much of a difference as the fleet size techs although you do need to research the basics of every weapon/resist type. Unfortunately the luxury resource unlock in the military tree is very far in and so usually I don't develop my systems around their use.

A little into the left tree at the start for farming bonuses. Then mostly into the bottom tree for the advanced colonization and increases to population size, with the odd tech from the right tree for the strategic resources and industry bonuses. Eventually though someone will go to war with me and all my tech gets thrown at the top tree and the cmd point techs in the left tree.

More planets means more points for research/industry so I always look to get all colony types as soon as possible. Also its easier to populate planets in your systems than to expand to new ones with low industry and weak defences.

This is true, and of course you can be unlocking planets with valuable resources both strategic and luxurious. Honestly the size of the bonuses from monopolies are so incredible it would be difficult to be competitive without two or three.

I usually balance out against economical needs but ultimately I want to make sure that conflicts don't overstay their time.

I tend to go fairly spread across the left, right and bottom, with probably more in the south for planet colonisation and travel. Then go top when everyone realises they don't like me any more and start trying to kill me!

I go straight for the first 6 techs straight away. Then I expand what I can colonise, then go for the left to get more tumbs up. Then get the resource ones on the right.

After that I'm producing enough tech to get about 6 military upgrades in 1 turn.
