Something that is puzzling me.

I have played endless now for at least a good half a day, started two games to try out different races and one thing still is not clear.

Getting populations to increase and stay happy seems to be an issue of mine, to the point where I try to avoid any planets with a negative population happiness bonus on it. Which makes me think I am either missing an important part of research or something else is the issue.

Note that I keep all my systems free of pirates, all systems have enough fids. I try to keep planets from getting over populated but that has only happened once when my home system was a single planet system. Even with a lvl 5 hero that is designed to optimize systems/happiness the systems will sometimes hang at barley content.

Any feedback would be nice.

Ask yourself this question : do you really need all that dust?

Also, on the left tech tree, there are several improvements that increase happiness.

Hello.

Basically the fastest population growth comes from system approval (ecstatic is fastest growth) and also excess food.

In the early game, lower the tax rate to raise approval. overpopulation will lower it over time, research techs to raise it. in the diplomacy tech tree there's the supermarkets, colonial rights, and information highway. You can then adjust tax to get a balance between dust income and pop growth.

Planet types have approval ratings so when colonizing a new system choose terran/jungle etc over lava/barren.

I dont know whether a high dust treasury or income affects pop growth directly, but in the early game setting dust exploits on your starting systems allows you to run a very low tax rate while having an income. This is useful to hire hero's and rush buy cheap improvements like farms/mines which can kickstart a new colony's development

And don't forget that the tech thread below offers options for terraforming, don't want your population to live unhappy in a desert? Make a terran/ocean/jungle world out of it. Just research the technology, click on the planet you want to change and on the left you can select to terraform the planet.
