I like Sophons personally, they're generally pretty friendly and law abiding neighbours.

I have trouble on deciding. I play sophons my self but concentrate on getting stronger than the other factions which is really easy for me even on Impossible. I heard the Hissho are really mean so I'm going to fight them next but as of my current knowledge, it doesn't matter because no faction is a threat anyway.

+1 to Cravers;

Deny strategic resources, keep them close to neutral. When the time is right, you get much fodder to level up your heroes

Of course if you cannot deny them their munchies then you are @#$%^&

Sophons are less prone to random acts of violence against me while I build up so I would rather be next to them every time! And seriously... DEATH TO CRAVERS!

Best would be Sophons-easy to make peace with and can sometimes get some tech out of them. The worst is ofcourse Cravers, I've come to see them as the greatest threat to me, if i am not playing them myself i tend to search them out, on the map until i find them then expand in there direction killing off any empires inbetween me and them so i can destroy them before they get to powerful in late game.

Interesting point. Right now I make sure when I start a game, there *are no* cravers. Especially since they are the most likely to have the infinite fleet bug.

What specifically could the AI do, for better ship design? Is the problem that the AI does not learn enough weapon techs? Or is the problem that given certain techs, the AI does not use the "best" ones in the ship builds?

Maybe it has the techs but the ships are old, and it doesn't spend enough on instant retrofits. For me, that is the only reason to have dust. Conquer planet, retrofit fleet, repeat until done.

Good neighbours are the Sophons, with diplomacy you can be allied with them and share research.

Best deal as Hissho you can make, but i had to defend the Sophon AI all the time against a bunch of craver AI's in this "testgame".
