We are planning for release to have one intro movie for each faction and one intro movie for the universe. I hope you guys will like them.

Maybe also some pics for some ingame events (first colony of the player, first space victory, first conquest of a star system and for those game events)

Yes, this kind of intro and outro would be more than sufficient. The title of the space strategy game with best movies imho still belongs to Imperium Galactica 2. No other game has come close. And as mentioned, even legendary Homeworld did not try to have such ingame movies as it really was not necessary.

The slideshows would be good and practical choice. Especially, as the art for ES is so well done. SoaSE, Borderlands and Witcher 2 came to mind too and it worked very well in those games.

I really like the sounds of this, the saved resources could be used elsewhere or even to create several alternative art cinematics that are tailored to your race's ship/architecture art style or the victory type you achieved.

I just read in a post that the Dev team does not have the budget to create awesome in-game cinematic scenes, such as an epic opening sequence or victory condition reached finale. Totally understandable. My suggestion, take a page from the developers of the space-faring RTS game Homeworld. Essentially their opening cinematic was a cleverly crafted story of nicely drawn pictures. To me, a set of nice-artwork to the backdrop of good music and narration can be far better than a clumsy attempt at a movie-style picture any-day, especially since the graphics of an art-drawn video do not fade to the "tacky-zone," as I like to call it, as the tools and programs used to create computer graphics are constantly improving, leaving old video game cinema to look like a pre-schooler's rendering. An artist left free to paint the storyline of ENDLESS SPACE in a set of visual slides at the opening of the game would definitely suffice and have my vote for this promising upstart game!

What do you think?

I welcome the slideshow rather than a 3D cinematic if that means those scarce resources were put into refining gameplay.

It's a good idea, and there can even be some movement with panning across a larger image. The Witcher 2 game used that style of hand-drawn artwork with a bit of panning and zoom (and a voiceover, which ES doesn't need), and it worked very well. You can do a lot with static artwork and a bit of panning and zoom.

Agreed. This would be quite the excellent idea. There are plenty of games that are starting to go the whole slideshow route instead of full blown 3D graphical intro and cutscenes, and to be honest, it's a nice change of pace. I mean, just look at how Guild Wars 2 is doing their whole thing. Granted, they also have a bunch of awesome trailers and whatnot, but none of their cutscenes are really over the top, just simple "potrait" style things (in-game), and their whole cinematic theme is centered around well painted slides.

I agree, something that just shows a few pictures to illustrated each point, say it runs through the background of the games lore. Like telling us a bit about the Endless, then giving a brief intro into each of the races.

One like this that instantly springs to mind is the one from Borderlands on the zombie island.

Exactly, and what I have seen from the renderings of the faction or race choices, is that they obviously have access to a very talented artist. They just need to let him/her go to town on some grand-scale painted visuals, use ones they have already like you suggested, and BADDA-BING, BADDA-BOOM...your opening video is done, both remaining stylish and cost-effective. Now if they really wanted to take this to the next level they could incorporate some movement in the drawings, not unlike ANNO 1404 or Dawn of Discovery as it was called in North America. Now that was an awesome piece of work!

I believe Sins of a Solar Empire does something similar and I would agree that it is a good idea. There is already a good deal of artwork that would be appropriate for such cinematics so they wouldn't even be starting from scratch.
