I didn't see a thread for this in my searches, if this is a duplicate my apologies. Ive run into this the last couple of games Ive played. I was playing in a huge map and managed to cut off the AI before it could expand to much towards me so I had it cornered. I was at war with the AI and had its ships mostly busy so i sent a batch of colony ships to grab a bunch of uncolonized planets to the south of their influence before it could grab them. I made a bunch of colonizers, no weapons and no escorts, and sent them to the south, not noticing the path they were taking. Each one of them pathed through the middle of the AIs territory, through their capital world, while I was at war with them. The fleet at the AIs homeworld of course wiped them out completely. The only upgrades the Colony ship had was engine speed. Nothing else. I can place screenshots/save files if needed when I get home.

If it had been a scout instead of a colony, that might have been what you wanted. So the game should not prevent this. I think the solution is to give a way to set waypoints.

in my head anyways another way around this is to make restrictions on travel if you have civilian modules on board

I'm seeing massive pathfinding issues since the last patch. scouts, warships, colony ships all are affected. I'm just trying to move from 1 star to the next with a non-wormhole path inbetween and suddenly the ship goes sideways or backwards. It's like certain paths are not really there, gotta always go around, and when you forget you will waste a few turns going the wrong way.

Not to hijack a topic, but I'd also love to see a way to set a ship on a direct flight to another system once you've achieved Warp Drive, so that the ship will bypass strings and wormholes and just fly straight to a system.

maybe a click and drag option?

waypoints are a great idea too. i never trust AI pathfinding

Click and Drag would work, or if another modifier key were added (like CTRL+Right Click).

I came here looking for roughly this issue, and even brought a screenshot.

I sent a ship to Kamos in the above image from Scorpius, and then couldn't move it away, so I invaded the system. After taking it, ships will go from Scorpius to Kamos, but not from Caelum to Kamos. Also, any ships leaving Kamos try to go through Ukdah, and if they are not destroyed by the Cravers then they just route right back to Kamos. It looks like all the routes out of this system are broken.

Good to hear.

Will it be the waypoints idea or something else ? Can we have informations, please smiley: smile?

You will be able to override the algorithm by holding the left shift key and right-clicking on the system(s) you want. If you have the warp drive technology, ctrl + right-click on a system will force a free movement to the selected system.

To add a little bit about pathing, I have trouble testing as I am not sure if I am running into a bug or if I am limited by technology or something else. Before this most recent patch I had pathing issues where I could not go to places. I am seeing it more after Alpha 2. It would be nice to see an error pop-up to explain why I can't go to a path. Something like requires XX technology or no path/route found or something similar. This would make it easier to distinguish if I am having touble because I am doing something I shouldn't or if I am having trouble because of a bug. Appologies if this already exists and I just have not seen it. Every session I have played has had planets I could not reach even if I saw a line directly to it. Sometimes I find I can go a different path so I assumed that was some strategy or technology issue.

I would think that an option to click on the fleet you wish to move and hold shift to click each system in order of movement would do the trick. This would allow greater flexibility later when sending defensive ships when colonizing in this particular situation without the risk of getting the defensive ships damaged or destroyed. This option would also allow a "Recon in Force". For example, you could move through several systems with a fleet and detect pirates or enemy vessels. That fleet could engage at that system and move on afterwards and you could then send another fleet for defense subsequent to that action.
