What's the point of dust?

Hi everyone,

Just started playing Endless Space and am really enjoying it. However, I'm not seeing the point of dust, I just seem to be acquiring lots of it, and don't really know what to do with it.

So what can you use dust for? (besides buying heroes, which really isn't that expensive)

Cheers,

Joel

You can buy ships/improvements by clicking the gold symbol next to them on the Queues. Also, there are some Dust costs for battle cards.

  • Put your tax rate on 0% and watch science & production sky-rocket
  • Finish builds early (the coin icon in the build tab, be careful not to cancel builds once you've bought them), although the pricing is somewhat bizarre ~ some low tech projects cost vastly more than higher, better ones
  • Refitting fleets, and in particular ~ produce multiple "blank" ships in a single turn, then refit these all at once to much higher specs. This also allows you to get around resource limits at this time [exploit]
  • Bribing the AI via diplomacy ~ but this doesn't seem to be effective at this time
  • No, really ~ use it to refit fleets constantly
  • Some battle cards use it: but at tiny amounts, and the cards tend to be worse than the ones you get through research anyhow. Also, there seems to be timers on them, it's never explained anywhere though
  • Swim in it naked

When you build things you somtimes need dust(although i dont know if it is for upkeep or the cost of it), you can use it in diplomacy, and if you have enough of it you can instanly build ships and buildings.

In the alpha2, there is possibility to gain a lot more dust then, instead of watching it grow up, use it to by buildings and ships like said above.

Thanks a lot guys - did not notice that you could use it to insta-build stuff. Guess I just need to keep playing the game and see what I can do with it.

When at turn 100, having dust income exceeds +10k per turn with all of your colonies ecstatic and your ships much higher tech than all the other empires, well, that's when you save your dust for occasions needs you to build 10+ DN fleets in one turn because someone was dumb enough to declare war on you.

Buyout is your friend =) Upgrading new systems rapidly is a great advantage of having dust.

i think it's much better in alpha 2 now. obviously still needs tweaking. buyout is cool on lower production planets, and once diplomacy plays a bigger part in the game it opens up lots of possibilities for dust spending as well.
