Sophons are amazing. I tried to play as Horatio the other day and quit because the slow research was just too annoying. I like teching up.

Don't worry, lots of people took a while to find that out :P.

My biggest 'doh' moment was that I'd played about a dozen games before I figured out you could colonise 'in-system', the amount of time and effort I wasted making unnecessary colony ships makes me cringe..

So how do I change race for me?

I had the opposite problem! Didn't realize you were suppose to click colonize with your ships so I just left them at the system waiting for it to become mine

I found the Sophons to be my favourite at first, but I just finished a game with the Horatio and I have to say that their hero cloning is an incredible asset, as is their population bonus, I am torn between the two.

Nah, its not obvious tbh.

When I first got the game I changed my race like instantly, played a few games and wanted another change. Sat there for 10 mins clicking on things because I couldn't work out how to do it, despite doing it before. Now that's stupid smiley: wink

I also love the Sophons, but I think the free techs and tech bonus are overpowered. And it took me several games to figure out the whole in system colonization thing :/

Same here on the in-system colonization thing.

And Nthing the Sophons love. As long as you can survive long enough for it to take off, Research is God in 4X games.

Sophon Addiction - it takes SUCH a toll. Won't you please sponsor a struggling ES player with additional factions, bags of Doritos, and six packs of Redbull?

But i'd like an evil science faction to be added.

research the empire wide engine bonuses and the engine upgrades (support module) you can put on your ship.

i always find cravers easiest, although now the AI seem less agressive sophons are much easier, i died many times trying as sophons on alpha1 cos they didnt have the military capability to stop all AI hittign you at once, at turn 30 lol. but they're ships are so damn sexy. and AI seems less agressive now making them much easier.

Just finished my first large game as Sophons. Scientific victory around turn 250. Playing on normal against UE, Hissho and Horatio. Extremely interesting game. UE managed to become real powerhouse, and there was some very hard fighting in the galactic cores bottleneck systems.

In the end, superior technology prevailed as the UE was slowly pushed back to the edges of the Galaxy.

Sophons fast engines and fast research give nice advantage if you can secure easily defendable position for your empire.

Also, I'm not sure about you all, but I think that Sophons (and Amoeba with grain of salt) feel really fitting to Endless spaces lore about technological ascension and advanced civilizations.

Bottom line: Where would you be without science?

yup I love sophons too. I have a science oriented playstyle just like you. after all, even with the combat penalties, a stone throwing caveman cant beat a Gundamesque Mobile Suit/Mech.

altho when the game comes out and I have the option to create my own I'll switch to making my own race.

As much as I love the X3's Split vibe of the Cravers' ships, Sophons are pretty much all I play. All but one of my ships look like cheap slippers for robots but the tech bonus makes every other race feel so sluggish. That said, I will go Humans every one and awhile.

Nah I like the UE ships they all seem to look like actual war ships(... well, except the dreadnought i'll grant you; that is a brick). Unlike the Hissho ships better aestheticly suited for frontal combat and the craver ships which look like they just welded everything in sight(or whatever the cravers sense with).

But all three races agree: "At least we're not Horatio."

I think a lot of the ships are inspired by the X series. Cravers=Split. Humans=Agron&Teladi Horatio=Boron. Hisho... equals steam-punk bird?

I think that's deliberate. They do look like flying bricks, but then the UA seem to be very 'utilitarian' in outlook so that sort of makes sense.

All I can say to that is: The Emperor protects!

Its hard to find a way in the beginning with the UE but once you started booming your flying fortresses will overwhelm everything including the oversized fishes (I like the design of the sophons they look like big fish, somehow strangely peaceful for warships, but it fits) of the Sophons. (^^,)

As long as the enemies of the Empire still draw breath there can be no peace!

@Randeng: Don't you dare insult the Emperors Navy, sir! (^^,) just kidding

No I really like the Human ships, they look functional and actually like something a human would actually build, nothing fancy, nothing out of the ordinary. Just a means to destroy your enemy. And somehow I think the look a little like the battle barges and flying cathedrals of Warhammer 40K. smiley: wink

I've only played as the sophons so far, My first game was on a medium map with 4 races, and the UE won an expansion victory by about the 200th turn. I went to war with Hissho and was destroying them, but it turned out that most of their resources were devoted to fighting off the invading UE. They took most of their star systems before I had a chance and totally blindsided me.

I was so sure I was gonna win too, I was first in research...but nothing else.

Even though I love being able to just hit a random button for the thrill of not knowing what I'll be starting with, when I have to pick a race to start with I always gravitate towards the sciency race. I played the University group in Alpha Centauri at least 10 times more than the other groups! And the same in MoO2.

I just like the idea of a peaceful race of scientists that are content to strive for understanding the universe but if roused can bring the death rays to bear and obliterate an enemy dreadnought with a cruiser and put in planetary defenses they could never hope to penetrate!

The squid a 100 times the squid!

Whenever I see the ships of the Sophons I think about fish, but strangely enough I like them very much.

They look calm, peaceful and technological advanced just as they should but when watched from the right angle and while unloading tons of beams the can look terrifying...

I think the artists did a great job on them... as with the terrans they might not look special or sophisticated but they look like they were built to be useful, just like something a human would build.

Sophons do rock and beam weapons just look so natural from their ships. I have to say though, I also like the UE aesthetic... I'm trying to think of any of the ships I don't like so far, they all "feel" right.

they remind me of amphibian grey's some of their ships have spheres that are windows but look all bug eyed i think the closest race to their research capability is the Horatio once they colonized a decent amount of systems. still the best looking ships out of the whole lot. UE cruiser looks like a anvil.
