I did once. I wanted to get to the other side of a small race's territory, so I just declared war and walked on through. They asked for a ceasefire, and I agreed, because I only declared war so I could move one fleet.

But usually if I'm at war, it's an all-in deal, where I'm trying to wipe them out or die in the process.

What do you do?

I have tried to get cease fires. Always turn me down. For some reason I'm never in the "position" for it to be accepted. Despite turning all their fleets into orbital debris fields and taking most of their planets. Regardless of the race I've played. So I'm not convinced the diplomacy even works at this stage, at least properly. Can't even offer them a bribe to accept a cease fire either. Wanted to offer an enemy UE faction a ceasefire, with one of the planets AI took as a bribe. Not even the option. Cravers had declared war on me and didn't want to fight on two fronts. Didn't matter in the end. Wiped them out. Then smashed the Cravers. They asked for a cease fire. Gave it cause not interested in occupying their crap worlds after they got thru with them (Raze Worlds already!!).

Then the Hissho got their knickers in a twist over my expansion, declared war, almost got me. The crumbling Sophon tried to get in on my rear flank. But held them off with a wafer thin defense, modernized my ship designs. Rushed my builds and refit what was left. Managed to pull the win out in the end while fighting a 3 front war in the end, woulda been 4 if I hadn't wiped the Sophons and secured my rear. Then ate the Hissho. Then the silly Horatio's declared on me. With ships more pitiable then the Hissho had. Synch Lasers against my Collapsor Beams, with the self repairing hulls makes for a mismatch. Not that their lasers got thru my shields to even scratch my hull paint.

But yeah... Cease Fire would be useful. If it ever worked.

I've used it a couple times. Hell, I've even had it accepted once or twice.

But, overall? Not worth it. Diplomacy is pretty much completely borked at this point.

Umm, well I have tried to used it but it never works. Either it tells me war weariness is too low, or military strength is too low. Hello, I have just conquered three of your systems. And I really do not want to wipe you out. But no, why would you accept a ceasfire, right? The AI really needs much work now.

Yeah I have to say most games seem to fail on this point as AI refuses to make peace even while losing the war. I cant tell you how annoying this was in Civ 5 and Master of Orion 2

If it is more beneficial I will accept a cease fire; ie. getting attacked on 2 fronts.

I use it often. If you battle an more than one frotn and ther is a third empire on the other side of the galaxy.

Why not cease fire with them?

I have never successfully offered a cease fire, although I have often tried. I tend to war for limited objectives. Once I've pushed an enemy back behind a wormhole frontier, I often don't care to push them any further at that point. The AI refuses to accept ceasefires ever, though. The best thing I can do is start roving their planets with my fleets, forcing them into last place militarily. At that point they will usually (but not always) offer me a ceasefire. I accept it. I'd been trying to give them one for years at a point like that, anyways.

I even used it as Cravers. I needed few turns to have my new class ships go out from my industries. Then I broke the cease fire and came back to war with the Empire. They had much more point than me, that's why even with Cravers, it was a good deal to stop the fight few turns.

I have yet to play a game as any faction where the complete and utter annihilation of the other factions was not the only way to ensure my own security and chance at victory. No matter what victory type I was aiming for I always needed the most planets to achieve it an when you are trying to have the most planets it puts you in conflict.

I'd use it all the time - if the game would let me. It always gives me the "I'm sorry but since the AI declared war on YOU, they're the ones who have to offer a cease fire" excuse -.-
