I've played games 10 years older that had 3D galaxy maps...

Is this game going to be flat 2D at release?

Do you mean the position of the stars? They are on one level like on an board game.

I think this is an feature and should not be changed(and will not be). I like it.

In the galaxy view, I think the 3D would add too much trouble in playability compare with the gain in realism and fun.

I like the way the galaxy is set up now. It's simple and easy to figure out, and the complexity of making it 3D wouldn't help it much. Assuming, that is, you mean 3D in the sense of...3D chess, creating many different directions and planes to move on, as opposed to the single plane of 2D.

What's so bad in having both worlds? First Sword of the Stars, a very good recent 4x game had both and even elaborated on the 3D part, but having a 3D galaxy disk with different planes as an OPTION would be very welcome. After all, it does add some depth too.

Well nothing assuming it doesn't up the requirements for the game or cost more dev time better spent elsewhere (imho).

I personally don't see the point in a 3D map, it would just make it more difficult, and it is rather unnecessary.

Yeah I agree. 3D maps don't add significantly to the gameplay, and make maps much harder to read at a glance.

That's way it's good to have it as an option for those who would want to use them, for example me. I'm sure there are other people who wouldn't mind it either.

As long as movement is mainly done through "Nodelines" similar to how SOTS handles human travel, I really don't see the point in 3 dimensional maps where the stars don't align up perfectly flat.

Now if movement were to be made more diverse (See SOTS) later on - that is races that ignore the nodelines (or just don't have them at all) then we can start discussing 3 dimensional maps.

The problem is that it would mean a significantly longer time for the devs to add this.

If its 3d can you move the view around so you move fleets if the stars are akwardly positioned?

How would you have to change the galaxy generation algorithm?

Would this put even more of a strain on less endowed computers?

How much of a strain would it add to multiplayer when its released?

Plus 2d looks nice.

I'm sorry, but did you mean "nice"?

I find there is a certain charm to the 2-D map and it takes nothing away, I think. Besides, it's not like it's unrealistic, some very old disk galaxies are basically flat (so I guess if one wants to be ultra-realistic just always play the disk shape map with old set for galaxy age).

Sometimes I can add needless complication (albeit it's cool to look at). Sword of the Stars 1 is great for its 3-D map, but it didn't make the game for me and I personally like the map layout of Star Control II better than Star Control III (which was the jump to 3D and was, for me, hard to navigate).
