Colonization - Does it matter how many systems you are colonising at one time.

Here is another tip I'm sure most of you already noticed but you can drop a whole bunch of colony ships on a system at once (assuming you have the pop elsewhere to build the ships), doing one per planet. If I can I like to take most or all of the planets at once.

Now that is a very good point - I knew the colony ship dropped 1 pop unit on the new planet - but it hadnt occured to me (and I hadnt noticed) that it was taking those colonists from the planet/system they were built on - that also explains why they get to 999 turns to build the next colony ship and then a couple of turns later there it is - I have been trashing the population of the system.

I have it in mind to get the first couple of systems set up and then go through a period of rapid expansion - certainly I will be looking a lot harder at how I accomplish this.

also you might wanna consider the race your playing some prefer expansion while others prefer max planets before moving on....

Do what you want and fits your own strategy the best, as others have now mentioned there are diffidently some trade offs. I tend to do keep it to 5 or less at a time outside of my first set where I'm grabbing resources as fast as I can find them and if it means more systems then so be it.

I tend to colonize as many systems at the start as i can, the more system building queues are better then 1 system with 4 planets and only 1 build queue

I would say that there is a passive penalty : if you build a colonist whereas you have not maxed the population cap of a food planet, as a colonist reduce the population by one, you reduced your food production and thus reduce your growth. Moreover, if the new planet you colonize is not fun, you decrease your approval.

So yes there are some mechanisms to counter the 'fast expand' thing yet, but for sure they need some tuning (espescially in alpha 2 with its 'easy dust' thing).

You can do what you want, and I think it's better to colonize 3 or 4 systems at the begining quickly.
