Year 0

Sabel looked out from the balcony of his research institute at the night sky. This was a big year for his people--they had finally mastered the technology to send people across the stars to make homes on new worlds, and built the ships to prove it. It was a big year for him as well, for he had finally completed his Compendium of Prospective Technologies. As the leader of his people, he would do his best to do right by them in the years to come. But he also had a private dream. He had identified twenty-four key resources in existence in the galaxy, and it was his goal to study them all.

The ships immediately set off for the nearest star of Duyel; in less than a year, the first scouts had made it. The Sophons would have to get used to warm weather.

They saw five planets, all in tight orbits.

The idea of collecting all resource is nice.

I think it needs a big ammount of luck to have all of them near your home.

So it is not less hard than the other victorys i think.

StK: I'm playing on Normal.

Photon_Ventdesdunes: Yep yep.

Year 6

In six years' time, a colony had been established on the surprisingly fertile grounds of Duyel III, and scouts had explored all planets in the constellation. Early research had brought Sabel his first resource as well--Redsang, found right on his home planet. But not all was peaceful in the galaxy...

Year 15

For years there had been scattered reports of dark shapes moving among the more distant stars of the constellation. The (for the Sophons only had one military ship at the time) scout ship was dispatched to Leo to investigate.

They barely had time to send out a distress signal before they were overwhelmed.

Year 22

The Sophons were shocked at this unprovoked act of aggression. Though peaceful by nature, the Sophons could not remain defenseless. After some hasty military research, five Loyalty-class Corvettes were designed and ordered; soon they were flying off the assembly lines.

Designed as a fast anti-pirate measure, the Loyalty class carried a raft of missiles and some limited protection against kinetic weapons.

Year 24

With the new escorts, colony ships could now travel in relative safety. The Sophons finally established a third colony on Edasir, one of the few remaining easily habitable systems. The main fleet then proceeded to watch for pirates at Leo.

Year 28

Six years after the first Loyalty was laid down, the main fleet managed to track down the pirates who had attacked thirteen years ago.

Revenge was swift. Finally, colonization could continue in peace... for now.

Year 30

Soon Applied Casimir Effect was mastered, and the Sophons headed out into open space.

Year 45

In fifteen years, this half of the galactic core had been explored. The Sophons established a colony at the far end of the wormhole.

First contact with another spacefaring civilization: the United Empire. They didn't look too friendly...

Year 69

The Sophons expanded into the core region, against stiff competition from all other five civilizations (including a rival nation of Sophons). Here the old Loyalty-class cruisers dispose of a Hissho vanguard.

Finally, the Cravers declared war, followed by three of the other factions; only the Hissho, perhaps more chastened by the initial encounter, stayed officially neutral. Could the Sophons keep their position at the crossroads of the galaxy?

Year 68-96: The First Galactic War

Pirate activity had worn down the Sophons' initial fleet of five corvettes. To fend off all comers, the Sophons would need more firepower.

Thus, the Puissance-class cruiser was designed. Armed with fast-traveling beam weapons, and carrying a balanced load of passive armor and support systems, the Puissance was a reliable workhorse from the start.

While the Loyalty-class had troubles against large pirate fleets, none could stand against the cruisers.

After nearly thirty years of war, the final battle was fought at Oshyi. A fleet of seven Puissance III cruisers defeated a rival Sophon fleet, and annihilated the primary United Empire fleet. After this, all opposing factions agreed to cease hostilities.

This freed the Sophons to continue on their program of colonization and research. Two more arms of the galaxy were free to be explored.

Year 96-151: The Interbellum Era

Peace between the empire lasted fifty-five years. After clearing out the last of the pirates, the Sophons settled all unclaimed systems; their empire now spanned the entire diameter of the galaxy. Scientific progress continued apace.

Entire systems were transformed into jungle paradises.

Sabel was close to his goal.

Year 151: The End of Peace

Whether because of old grudges, or simply the idea that the Sophons had become soft, the United Empire declared war once more, followed closely by the Cravers and the Horatio. The galaxy was once again at war.

Year 151: The Second Galactic War

The United Empire was the first to attack. Despite over half a century of technological advances, even the United Empire dreadnoughts were no match for the GWI-era Puissance IIIs and IVs holding the line at Oshyi.

Meanwhile, the Sophons began development of the modern Victory-class destroyer. Early marks were designed with an offensive focus, and passive armor; however, it was found that these ships were unacceptably fragile, and later versions dispensed with the passive armor for an array of active defenses, which proved far more effective.

Year 163: Counterattack

In just a dozen years, the Sophons had turned the tables; their ships had broken the United Empire's fleets and now arrived in their home system of Spica. With Iaz's supply of Mercurite soon to be in Sophon hands, Sabel had only one resource left to claim: Hydromiel.

Undeterred, the Cravers were the next to attack. Victory-class destroyers mounted a counterattack, soon joined by a new defense-enhancing counterpart, the Fortitude-class.

Year 167: End in Sight

The United Empire home system had fallen, and all of its remaining systems were under siege.

More important to Sabel, however, was that a passing scout had revealed the Horatio home system, and a source of Hydromiel there. The final piece was within reach.

Year 174: Final Victory

After settling matters in former United Empire space, and turning back the weak Horatio attempts at attacking Ita, the Sophon fleets swept into Horatio space. Temos swiftly fell.

Sabel's dream had finally been realized.

And with it, Sophon dominance of the galaxy.

FIDS production can reach pretty astronomical (no pun intended) levels late-game--six-planet systems were producing more than 2,000 Industry per turn, and with Dust Virtualization (a 2-turn research at this point), that could be increased to more than 3,000!
