I'd say it's time for random events, or maybe a ninth faction.

That would be a good idea: a non-playable ninth faction that doesn't do diplomacy and is ultra hostile and powerful. A race against in multiplayer coop would gain another dimension.

Master of Orion 2 - Battle at Antares had something like that : The Antarians would attack from their homeworld, a planet in another dimension. They would open a rift and attack one of your system. One Victory condition was to build a High tech fleet, around a system with a Dimensional Portal to conquer Antares and defeat the Antarians once and for all.

(Sorry to compare so much Endless Space to MOO, i loved this game, and i start to love ES too)

The Sowers actually remind me more of the Greenfly terraforming machines from Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space novels. Self-replicating terraforming machines gone amok.
