Galactic Civ due to pure nostalgia, man the hours spent on that game, altough I expect ES to grow past that eventually but it will take awhile before it does :-)

Possibly Distant Worlds with all expansions, I was sorry to not see it in the poll smiley: frown

I kind of liked Distant Worlds, but to be "the best" or "the greatest" it would need a severe overhaul, imho. I'm all for complexity and options after options after features, but Distant Worlds just took my brain, chew on it several hours and spat it back at my face before I could understand a single thing about what I was doing. Didn't like that part. It was... gooey...

I would give my right testicle for a GalCiv 3

It's really hard to find a good sci-fi 4x game that has as much character as Moo2, but ES looks so far like it might be the closest thing to a modern successor as I've found across the web and I have very high hopes for it.

Most of the ones listed are really good, I selected all but BotF and Stars! but Stars! was a pretty cool little game for it's time. Oh and don't forget Armada 2526 and Distant Worlds those are definitely better then some that are listed and they are recently. Also Empires at War, excellent game. I liked Lost Empire Immortals too. Best sci-fi game ever, does this mean 4x or could things like X3 be included? If I had to pick one, I give the award to GalCiv2 and all it's expansions but I am going to tell you, this Endless Space is darn near up there with some of the best and this poll shows it.

But that is the thing I like about it, you could in effect let your empire run itself, turning on as much automation as you would like and then turning off the automation for the parts I want to play. I have no idea how someone who wants to manage everything would enjoy themselves, there is waaaaay too much going on. But for someone like me that likes to create a Settlers style micro colony it is fantastic. Wonderful feeling of building tensions, many races and personalities. A feeling that you uniquely have your own objectives (with the Legends expansion) and being able to mod in some of my favourite pop culture races for some added fun.

And although the gameplay is very similar in many respects your starting conditions and what hand you are dealt each game are vastly different, and you can configure your starting conditions MASSIVELY as well, making the game as hard as I would like to and actually quite a different game each time. I have found some races that have been my massive nemesis to be my most useful ally the next game. I have also found myself fighting off a massive insectoid coalition that is eating up the Galaxy or other times trying to trim back a high tech fast colonising race that is annexing the entire galaxy itself.

Man Birth of the Federation all I remember about that game was the fact it took forever to load turns after like turn 100. I really enjoy Endless Space but Master of Orion 2 edges it out just slightly as I was still playing it using a Dosbox till Endless Space came out.

Sins of a Solar Empire. I like Endless Space, but I have a rule that strategy games can't be rated until 40 hours of play. I haven't played any of the other games listed sadly, if anybody has suggestions on them PM because I will try any game!

Stars! was my first introduction to a 4x game so I have fond memories of it. I later became a member of the Stars! Supernova Dev Team... shame to see it never got finished. I still have the code around here somewhere for it... mostly worked on the network play. Jeff and the rest of the team were great folks.

MOO2 of course was a close second. I still love that game!! It was the first time I made fan-fiction stories for any game.

Ascendency was another one.

I have played many others and ES is the first time I have gotten that old feeling back from when I played Stars!. Many memorable games with Stars!. Like the time we played it at where I worked. We would play our turns throughout the day. Heck, even our boss got in on the fun by rewarding the winner with a $25.00 gift card to somewhere!

Anyways, I have been enjoying ES a great deal even though I am getting my arse handed to me... smiley: smile

Good job guys!!!

Master of Orion 2 for sure (bougth after release, was damn expensive, but nice huge illustrated game boxsmiley: smile, and it still runs (made ISO from original) under W7. Perfect turn based strategy, love its turn based combat, which is very variable and different in any and every fight, awesome balanced micro and macro management, ship creations (and then you can directly use weapons you loaded in ship), perfect music and imo one of best AI in games ever (they never give you anything for free and if they can, they will crush you down)... Try Hard difficulty againts more opponents, its the strategist heavensmiley: smile Only small minus is fast late tech researching, even on tiny or small space (but can be "fixed" by mod).

Results of this question is quite amazing. So many people think that game, which jumped from 0.5 to 1.0 is better than master of orion in which you had better fights, better space control and you were able to control your fleets any way you like. Here we have even wonder victory without wonders. For me it is like rushed beta. It was too fast for this game to enter gold state. There are still many bugs and many things to do and develop and change like people wanted in G2G

Would it be possible for the Supernova team to use Kickstarter to make the game? I would very much like to see Stars! to make a return.

There have been an number of projects like Dead State, Xenonauts, Grim Dawn, Republique, Banner Saga, Wasteland 2, and many more that have obtained at least $100,000 dollars from donations and pre-orders through Kickstarters. You might want to look into Paradox Interactive for publishing, as they historically allowed extensive patching and expansion of games after they are released. (They specialize in strategy games, too.)

This poll results are completely useless, because we are in the forum of endless space and too many people have only played Endless Space, and so (obviously) they vote for it.

How fast should it take if the game is already practically complete when they open the beta stage? What are all these bugs because I havent seen many of them. Who are you to dictate what they are to do with their game just because its G2G? Lighten up, its good game. The poll is biased to ES. Half the ES votes and you will probably have the truth. In a months time when people have stopped gushing about it we will do another poll. Still is a telling poll though.

I still think ES has the potential to be up there with the great MOO2 - dont forget a lot of the MOO2 votes are nostalgic only and some of those people probably wouldn't choose to play MOO2 today even if the graphics were updated. We tend to forget the limitations of old games and only remember the great bits. I didnt play MOO2 myself but I cannot believe it was quite as good as some people say it was. There are several games I loved from that era as well but I wouldn't play them today. Even my favourite 4x game, Stars!, which was a great game in its time looks terrible compared to the present games.

Games in those days had more gameplay but less time spent on their graphics. Games these days have to have more time spent on their graphics to compete. It puts a limit on the amount of gameplay the devs can add. In many ways we are the sowers of our own doom, expect high graphics and we get less game for our money.

Personally I wonder what a game would be like of it had MOO2's gameplay and ES's graphics! Wouldnt that be a game to behold!!

Distant Worlds is an excellent game once you take your time to learn it. I personally play with all automation off, except taxes. Never liked microing taxes in 4Xs. It's a complex game, yes. But, once you learn certain mechanics, the game kinda opens up to you and becomes very enjoyable to play. Also, I LOVE the living Galaxy concept of DW. Because of this, DWs closest relative is, bit surprisingly, the Space Rangers.

I can easily put DW alongside with MOOs and SMAC. It's very unique and good game, even if it still has some minor problems.

I voted for MoO2, which was my favorite X4 game. Unfortunately MoO3 was worlds behind it's ancestor. Sins was a good game but i like round based game more.

Endless Space is a great game which makes till now enormous fun but there are only some small things which were better in MoO2 but it is not much.
