1) Galactic Civ's series

2) Endless Space

2) Master of Orion

I do expect Endless Space to claim the crown after some updates though. GalCiv got a lot of polish to become so good too.

Master of Orion hands down. smiley: wink

Sins of a Solar Empire and Endless Space are damn awesome too, but they're going to become even better, right? (At least Endless Space)

Ouf of the list, i will have to pick Alpha Centauri, since it the closest to the 4x game, even though not the best (Civ4 is). not sure why Sins of a Solar Empire is even listed, its just an RTS. Endless space, too early to tell.

edit:

If going by the question of the poll, the answer would be Elite/X-Universe games. They have it all. Space, 4x and coolness. and 3D graphics. smiley: biggrin ( And ofc EVE online, which is the multiplayer version of X-universe so not for everyone)

Master of Orion 2? Is a pretty average game with some nice features for its time true. Complete micromanaging hell. The thing which made it good was the extremely fun battle mini-game, but thats hardly a 4x element is it. This became particularly apparent with M.o.O 3 which kept the micro but removed the mini game. Anyone still playing it? (i do but thats because i love Excel spreadsheets. smiley: biggrin )

I actually like the battle cards system in ES, its a nice compromise between allowing tactics input w/o abusing the system and full autocombat boredom with no input at all.

Best sci-fi game?

Not in this list.

I don't really have a favourite type of 4x game, as I find them to be for armchair generals half the time. smiley: frown I prefer the personal touch, not the 'I'm the only leader and/or person who can think for some reason.' *shrugs* None of the games listed have devaited from that.

Master of Orion 2 because of how much fun I had with that game despite it's flaws that we find analyzing it after both the game and we have aged. Next was Birth of the Federation, the ST:TOS/TNG spin on MOO2.

Following those two is Endless Space. I'm new here and to the game, the 5 hour session last night kept me up an hour past my bedtime and that's a good indicator it will soak up time this weekend. I get what others say about it feeling cold from a race/diplomacy/event perspective however these things can or are scheduled to improve with patches. As someone else mentioned, ES tickles the parts of the brain that made MOO2 so satisfying and I'm anxious to see how ES evolves.

I liked MOO1 over MOO2, I don't like the planet micro management and loved the huge fleets in MOO1... plus the interface seemed more inefficient to me in MOO1...

MOO2 is still the best, IMHO, but I haven't played it in ages. Even at the time I remember thinking it needed a much better UI, so I'm sure it would drive me crazy now. It's such a shame they absolutely botched MOO3.

I also still have fond memories of a now obscure space 4X called "Spaceward Ho!" It had its own unique silly style and a rather minimalist approach, but what it did, it did really well.

I wonder if ES is based on Birth of the Federation? I mean the combat is almost entirely the same, so it's nothing new. Even the combat was more fun and nicer to watch in Birth of the Federation. The combat system in ES is a complete Fail in my opnion. No fun at all.

To the poster who said that combat is not part of the 4X game is wrong. It's one of the main parts of the 4X game. That is the Exterminate part of the game.

No the exterminate part of the game is getting rid of the other races. You don't necessarily have to see it in all its 3d glory for it to happen though. In one of my favourite game's Stars! you only saw a bar moving to depict a battle in a similar manner to the battles in Hearts of Iron 2 - and no-one complains about how those battles are depicted. Yet here you have fancy 3d visuals to watch but battles are still over quickly.

I like the way its done, I don't want the combat dragged out. It isn't the main focus of the game. The main focus is managing your grand strategy not controlling individual ships. Yes lets have a little bit more control but I dont want RTS gameplay and thank god the devs arent planning to do that!
