I had such fun as a kid playing Birth of the Federation. Got really annoying when you got far into the game with lots of turns as there was some memory leak and each turn would get longer and longer until it crashed.

Right now, Endless Space is my favorite game and I spend hours on it. And I'm still learning it. In the past, I've spent many enjoyable hours on Alpha Centauri, Birth of the Federation and Acendenancy.

Speaking of Endless Space, can someone point me to a place or graphic that explains all the different types of heros, what the little icons are, and their promotions and promotion effects. I haven't quite figured all that out yet. Thanks.

Votes ES & SOTS. Would have picked Alpha Centauri as well if I hadn't been so quick to click, such a stunning classic.

SOTS refers to SOTS1, I consider the sequel to [still] be crap - however, I still belive that game will completely destroy anything else once they eventually finish it.

Galactic Civilizations II is a game I will never understand why people liked.

Lol@Bias... You're asking on a non-neutral forum, so don't get too excited.

SotS1 and SMAC for me, if I'm limited to Sci-Fi

Civilization 3, 4 and 5 ( all for different reasons, but 4 is the best if push comes to shove ) if we're talking about the 4x genre as a whole.

If it indeed belongs to the 4x genre( I have doubts ), Alpha Centauri gets my vote. Never had I played a game more filling, every game another experience. I used to create tiny stories and images in my mind and at times marveled at my own imagination. The game sure did have a deep feeling to it( Brian Reynolds having a philosophy degree along with software engineering obviously helped ) and had almost endless replayability. Today's games not even get close.( save a few )

Endless Space doesn't even come close to Best of all time. Is it a good game. Yes. Can we have 1000's of hours of play like Moo or MOO II? No. 100's of hours? Yes, but ES is lacking soul and flavor that MOO had.

It's almost like Civ V, fancy, flashy, but no Pizzaz. If I have to pay to get Espionage in the game, I think I will just forget about ES, since I am not going through the Civ V blandness again, just to have to pay more to have it what it should have been on release.

To me, in MOO, I loved stealing tech, and destroying buildings. Sadly this is missing in ES. If it had Espionage then I believe ES could be the top 5 4x games ever, maybe even top 3.

MOO2 by a longshot.

- Easy, and non time consuming ship design that still let you customize, unique weapons rather than the typical rock/paper/ scissors approach.. (Black Hole Generators, Stellar Converters, good times!!!).

-Random events that affected gameplay but weren't crippling or win/ lose on their own. Mini goals within the games (defeating the guardian at Orion, etc).

-Races that played significantly differently.

I completely agree with this. Its what all these newer 4x's have all been missing. The orion guardian was awesome! I loved finding it and testing myself against it every now and then. Actually defeating it and collecting your prize (ship, hero, tech) rocked. Even the antareans were fun...especially visiting vengeance on them for all their raids. Anyone else notice that the negative events could be stopped by some sort of in game mechanic (more ships, increasing research, etc). This definitely went a long way in preventing me from feeling ruined by events, while immersing me in them.

I'm sorry but the poll is confusing. I do not know if you mean original Moo or Moo2. You should have included Moo2 option. And yes, Moo2 is the gold bar standard of all space-time (as you know, there is no such thing as space and time, but just space-time).

Imperium Galactum on the Commodore 64. Spent endless hours in that game. Also spent hours in Galactic Empire. I remember have 3 friends over and each bringing over their commodore 64 so we had 4 games of Galactic Empire running.

Just got Ascendency running on my Windows 7 pc with an dos emulator a couple weeks ago.

Imperium Galactica 2 is steal one of my favorites for espionage. The game disks are still sitting on my shelf.

Alpha Centauri and Expansion disks and boxes are still in front of me on my self.

If you don't know Ascendency and Imperium Galactica 2 are both in the Apple store for the iPhone and iPad. Wish they would remake them on the other platforms as I won't by Apple.

Very surprised no one is mentioning MOO3 ... One of my all time favorites .. A very ambitious project (a few levels in complexion above Endless Space (not necessarily a good thing) ) - rushed into production, poorly documented, unfinished ...

And still one of the best strategy games I've had the pleasure of playing ....

Well the Master of Orion option in the poll is supposed to cover the entire series.

That's why I voted for that option ..

Yet browsing trough the thread you will find numerous specific references to MOO2 and none to MOO3 smiley: smile

I dont know how anyone can play those old games now smiley: biggrin They were ok in their day (Ascendency and Imperium Galactica werent anything too special I seem to remember, even then) but now they look absolute pants. Even Medieval Total War 2 looks bad these days. Still each to their own. I loved a lot of the old games but I cant play them after playing modern games with their high resolutions and advanced animations. And I definitely cannot play my games on a phone either!

I used to love Millennium 2.2 (screenshot) and Imperium (screenshot) but there is no chance of me being able to go back to them now. In fact if I did go back to them now I'd undue some of my fondest memories of playing these game through to conclusion. Nostalgia is best kept in the past. smiley: smile

sigh... if you guys think ES is the best 4x... at least dont reply if you only played ES.

i mean come on... theres so much better.

To me it must be Star wars : rebellion, and i must admit i enjoyed the hero system of star wars rebellion way more , probably because it was actually finished on release...

ofc this is a special game. only 1v1 ( rebellion vs empire ) but still, it had way more depth than ES. what i did like was there was no tech three. tech threes are in my opinion a bad thing, cuz it makes you always go the most OP way). in rebellion, tech were coming slowly, and once you had good science heroes you can make them devellop better structures, ships, armies...

heroes had many missions, diplomaty, murder, capture, spy etc. the combat systeme was not the best, but at least you were in command.

The day i see a 4x with homeworld combat style, this will be my fav for a long time!

Actually to me, this game feels like a cheap version of civilisation, but with a way more ♥♥♥♥ed up IA and no soul.

i understand amplitude is small, but still, ES BEST 4X EVER? WOW! i have pity for people who voted for ES.
