Is there no way to play against custom races in Single player?



If so, why not? This seems like a ridiculous restriction.

More than likely a programming mishap. I'm sure that feature will become available in the near-by future.

I'm pretty sure each default faction has an assigned AI. So...



How do you program the AI of a custom faction? Craver-agressive? Sophon-peaceful? Very expansionist or with a focus on military tech or what? The faction affinity might not be representative of the playstyle given by all of the traits. You'll have to program the AI in modules, one for each trait, something like that, in a way that they can all work together. Otherwise you can get very powerful combos with a custom race yet the AI might not know how to use it. Say, Sophon affinity with constant war and no science bonus, or Cravers with all of the trade traits.



I can see this requires some thought, and other parts of the game are being worked on first. It should warrant a suggestion, but I still think AIs need to be refined first.

Yes, people already have problems with the AI. The whole AI system will probably need to be overhauled, and then after that modders can worry about programming their own races.
