[Suggestion] Build Queue Drag & Drop Expanded

As I have been playing, I have found my self trying to drag System Improvements from the list on the lest into the build queue. This usually happens when I want to place a new technology before a long list of queued items. I believe that being able to drag a system improvement from the left to the queue and place it there would be superior then having to click the item to build, then drag it in the build queue given the limited visual space available and the the possible number of queued objects in the list.

As a side note, I believe it would also be a good idea to stack like objects into a sub list of sorts. This way when you queue up 20 ships, you do not see each individual ship. Instead you see one entry for the ship type with a "20" next to it. To inspect the ships the option could have a drop down hierarchical list of the ships. This would show the same information but with out all the clutter for the build queue.

I am curious why you would queue up 20 ships. Is it because what you really want is to have that system build a certain ship class infinitely? Sort of like the "ind->sci" and "ind->dust" infinite choices. Other 4x games provide this. Perhaps this is a better solution than dropping into the queue, although having both would certainly be nice.

I like the idea of being able to drag a new project into the queue, but I'm no so sure about the stack of multiples. As cluttered as it is, I like being able to see the turn numbers, as (for ships anyway) it lets me plan out when I'll be getting my next fleet. It's also easier to buy-out the later ones on the list if they are listed like that, as I'm not sure how you'd be able to do that with your suggestion.

They're both good ideas, I'm just inclined against the second one.

I admit that 20 is something of an over exaggeration...but I have built 17 ships fleets from a single industry system. So with the Queue only being 4 entries high, those lists can get a little long. Of coarse my system was cranking out three ships a turn. But you can see the point, there are several minor optimization's that can be done to the UI and would help to enhance the experience. After all...Militaries do not contract for one ship at a shot unless they are REALLY expensive. They contract for 10...20...50...100 ships and those are then churned out by optimizing manufacturing processes and modular construction. :-) Why wouldn't a galaxy spanning empire do the same?

The other option that comes to mind would be a rally system. Where a ship that is just out of the manufacturing will go to a nearby system. Get three systems making ships all sending to the same place and you have a way to build fleets faster with fewer clicks. This would reduce "Mental Accounting" since the player would not need to go to three systems...just the one with the ships, so he/she can build their next fleet.

That is not an insurmountable issue. The queued total ships could list the total time to completion and a per ship completion...so say 2/20. 2 Turns till the next ship is done, 20 turns till all ships are done.

No, actually. This might work for smaller craft, like jets and commercial vehicles, but warships aren't contracted in any large numbers due to their cost. When the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was approved, only ten of them were commissioned: the first being the USS Nimitz on May 3, 1975, and the last being the USS George H.W. Bush on January 10, 2009. Now, in game we aren't limited by a budget and long build times, as navies are in the real world. But, still, ships aren't ordered by very much at any one.

But I do see you're point. There could be UI tweaks. Personally, I just like seeing the list.

Waypoints have already been suggested, although I'm unsure as to the idea's current status with the devs. Also, proposal rules limit one main idea/suggestion per thread to keep things from getting cluttered or off-topic.

Well in the case of larger ships, you are correct, they order 5 super carriers at a cost of hundreds of billions. BUT smaller craft like frigates are ordered in bulk since they are smaller and can be built in yards that can not handle a super carrier. Size matters.

As for one sug per...yeah ok. Just wish my brain worked that way...to linear for how I think.

Hey mod, could you please adjust the title to have the [Suggestion] taggy...kind of messed up but it is still a valid thread as long as my random musings can be curtailed.

Your first post counts for what the thread is all about. And I think the title is still valid. What would be your alternate title wish, then?

(It doesn't matter how much others and yourself derail the thread smiley: stickouttongue )

"[Suggestion] Build Queue Drag & Drop Expanded" Instead of "Build Queue Drag & Drop Expanded" because dah rules say it should be so I guess. heh.

Oh, you changed the title of the first post, but couldn't change the title of the thread? Didn't see that, sorry. It's done, now.

This thread is the origin of discussions about putting (however that comes to pass) items directly into specific positions in the building queue.

Other threads about this have been archived:

/#/endless-space/forum/29-archives/thread/13830-allow-placement-of-new-items-into-a-production-queue-into-the-front-of-the-queue

Feel free to post here about this topic here and inform yourself about the variations the threads listed above have already discussed, but don't open new suggestion threads for anything alike. smiley: wink
