[Suggestion] Star Exploitation

So far, it seems like the kind of star in a system is relatively inconsequential beyond the probability of certain planet types showing up. It would be nice if they had a bigger impact if certain higher-level techs allowed us to exploit the stars themselves, with different kinds of stars presenting different pros and cons. For example, larger and hotter stars like Blue Giants or Binary systems would receive more unhappiness than smaller, cooler stars, but at the same time would not attain the same energy boosts to the solar-orbiting stations. Such exploitations might also have greater ramifications for the entire system, depending on the exploitation means. For example, extensive solar collection panels that provide a great boost to science but dramatically reduce the food production (due to less sun getting to crops), or a science malus because the radiation they were studying is diverted to a special dust collector.

It would be cool to be able to exploit the stars somehow, but I'm not too sure about the stars affecting happiness / unhappiness; the planet do enough that.

Hell, you could even tie in stories to stars (star-eaters, mysteriously dying stars, dark matter, stars with cores) with pseudo science.

I would like to see this maybe have some stars that boost one FIDS area (for example yellow dwarfs could boost food).

The only way I could see a star directly effecting happiness would be because of heat, or lack thereof. I think balancing between planets, their anomalies/resources and any structures or anomaly reducers work well enough as far as happiness goes already.

Everything else, however, I agree with.

To clarify things, I'm not thinking that stars affect the system at large. I meant only for the population assigned to the star exploitation. You know, like how an Arid gets -5 and whatnot? Something similar based on the type of star - the bigger and hotter it is, the less people enjoy living near it.

On a side note, this opens a whole new level of star-based anomalies. Star specific, of course - don't want any "Garden of Eden" white dwarfs, now do we? smiley: stickouttongue

but does it matter how hot or cold a star is? I would of thought a hot star wouldnt matter if a planet was a long way out, and a cold star fine for close planets.

What I'm trying to say is... you know how each planet has population assigned to it? Now think of population slots on the sun, based on whatever platforms are exploiting it. Those are the people I'm suggesting would be affected by the heat; the hotter the sun, the more uncomfortable the working space is, and therefore the more unhappy this makes them.

This thread is the origin of discussions about star exploitation mechanisms/buildings.

Other threads about this have been archived:

Feel free to post here about this topic here and inform yourself about the variations the threads listed above have already discussed, but don't open new suggestion threads for anything alike. smiley: wink

Adding Dyson spheres, ringworlds, stellar engines and star lifting mechanisms to the list.
