I love the ship design, in fact it is what drew me to the game. I would like to see it taken a little bit farther and take a note from SFB (Star Fleet Battles - Tabletop) and offer an advanced design system for those of us who want a little more control. Basically what SFB did for those of you who are unaware is put the ships into a grid system where you had to figured out the spacial orientation and design of each component. You would be limited by space and by tonnage when designing ships.

Similar to Space Empires as well, however this if far to complex, and seems more like a spread sheet game of mathematics.

Even Space Empires was daunting to a new player, so i don't approve.

Only SE5. SE3 was like our current system (sort of). SE4 had linear system (components got damaged from right to left). Only SE5 had true component location, but even the vanilla combat system didn't take directional fire into account (though the code was there in order to make it happen, it just was unused).

SE3 only made the distinction of "inner hull, outer hull, armor" so that things like life support weren't the first things damaged, but is otherwise like what we have now (as all our components are "outer hull" components anyhow, and as soon as the armor (i.e. hit points) is breached, the ship explodes).

Well a life-support module isn't going to prevent a sip from exploding, no matter how many you have, but additional modules like life-support to replace the generic one (Adding in some kind of bonus) could be fun.
