I think it would be nice, if we had the option to select between 2 or 3 different hull designs for each ship class. (So, e.g. 3 scout hull designs, 3 destroyer hull designs, etc.). It would add a bit more diversity to the player's fleet if we can choose between several designs for each class IMO. There don't need to be tons of new designs or even a real design editor, just a hand full of additional designs for each ship class (and for every empire). The additional designs could be easily done, by just taking the original ship hull designs, adding some wings/modules and maybe retextureing the models, and voila you have an additional hull design for each class. Of course the additional hull designs of each ship should stick with the specific empire's design line.

I would like this idea, creating similar ships for different strategy.



Like cruisers with a bonus to warp speed, or destroyers with additional HP but less of a weapon bonus.
