Since we are having so many people making threads with connection issues, I think we might have to make it more clear to the player whether they connection is considered "open" or not. A lot of games do this by performing some simple tests when you are on the create game / join game screens.

Amen. This is also the underlying reason for many reports of "game hangs on loading screen", which get solved when the player puts their firewall in gaming mode. There is no reason for the game to hang, and the player should be clearly notified.
