I was thinking and brainstormed this literally small idea, for game-play use.

I noticed on our research tree that we can research the ability for a fleet to use 'camoflauge' etc. And some ground structures and space reseach is related to micro-isation and scanning/stealth and warp movement.

So, why can't we research probes that can be used as say, single shot spies into another empires systems, for some intelligence/updated status of their systems on the map, ship activity, (or whatever). That avoids the need for 'open borders'. This would be especially useful if one is at war with another empire. Knowing where to direct your forces (besides the obvious + to scanning range from your systems influence and ships) is part of the battle.

This also helps with early exploration, because sending a scout ship takes much longer to build and get underway for a system that you might not even be able to colonise. (let alone find yourself smack into your first fight against 4 pirates with a single un-equipped ship.) Expendable probes are a sure-fire solotion to these problems, and I'm wondering why they aren't or can't be included into the game mechanics in some way shape or form. (either as a ship type, or as part of a research option that ships and or systems can use to 'fire-off' into a certain known or unknown area.)
