Bribe/control pirates

I'd like to see this feature implemented.

I'd also like to see various different conditions under which a pirate would agree to co-operate with you.

Given the difficulty of the task that you assign them with, they should be able to ask you anything; from a set amount of Dust/Resources to a planet/solar system.

Further down the road maybe you could pit pirates against each other or even legalize them and integrate them in your empire as a "legitimate" fleet.

That would spice things up a bit imo, especially in "pacifist"/trade focused playthroughs.

Imagine starting out with a focus on expansion/trade. You make a "muscle" fleet just in case things get hairy. You manage to hit a few goldmines and you get to hire a few pirates (that you managed to keep at bay with that aforementioned muscle fleet) and you send them early on, to cut off some of your enemies' trade/suply lines.

Your enemy has no other option but sign a treaty with you.

You then proceed to use their talents as you see fit (+racial bonuses or access to enemy conducted researches for example).

You'll have to excuse me for getting carried away here for a sec, but from the 13hrs that i got to spend with the game so far i see that it holds tremendous potential.

One that i'd like to see it, at least approach, if not meet.

For all the faults that Sins of a solar empire had, pirate bounties where not one.

When playing multiplayer games, I often like to use underhanded tactics, secret alliances, funding both sides in wars, tech trading with the underdogs and so on.

The most important part of this strategy is not to get caugth with the hand in the cookie jar, thus funding intergalactic terrorists (pirates) would fit in very neatly with a more cloak-and-dagegr style of multi player gaming.

For those not aquainted with Sins of a solar emipre its really easy. Each player has a tag labled Bounty, at any time any player can add any amount of money to this Bounty. At certain intervalls everyone gets a notification that a pirate raid is imminent (this often leads to drastic jumps in the bounty ammount as everyone tries to out-bid each other). A few minutes later the raid is launched and the pirates attacks a system belonging the player with the highest bounty on his head. The size of the pirate fleet varies with the size of the bounty.

this is a nice idea but on the other hand they will have there base/ system guard to hell and then if its just you and another player then one way you would still get attacked and to take them out would take a massive fleet so you can take over what they have taken. plus it would be nice to play as a pirate if they get base/ system pirates are just BA in my opinion. =P

Reminds me a lot about Sins of a Solar Empire. There you can but a bounty on an enemy empire, once they go out to raid and pillage they'll go for the one with the highest bounty. You can also with the expansion pack send them to attack a specific planet that belongs to an empire and choose how much money you will put into the mission. The more you put, the more ships they'll send. But bribing individual pirates should only grant you temporarily passage on a system that they hover over at the moment. Paying em to join you or so seems kinda pointless as they're pirates in order to be free of empire service.

Though I hate to simply say "I agree", everything I would have said has been said by Clok. This sounds like an amazing idea and I do hope it's implemented. Otherwise, as people have touched on, the pirates will simply be a minor annoyance.

Great to see some support smiley: smile I really think, as said above, that this would indeed add some depth.

I agree that this would offer depth. The other thing about pirates that annoys me is that when they orbit a colony with no ships they seem to just sit there until you bring fleets up to destroy them. I would like to see them steal dust, blockade or even invade the planet depending on their relative strength. Planets captured by pirates could be the aforementioned bases.

Really good idea that would add more depth to the game.

I would like to see a home base maybe where you could hire ships for straight up dust.

Also instead of a home-world maybe a large space station lying around in space. Then factions could contest over it leading to a potential killing field and an optional goal that in the long run could pay off.

this is an interesting mechanic no doubt, but having played only one game so far - in which the pirates and raiders have all-but-wiped-out two of the AIs and continually send sufficient fleets against me to keep my military completely quashed, despite my having churned out warships exclusively for the last thirty turns - I see balancing pirates as a far higher priority for the devs than bribing them

not least because bribing these pirates would be game-winning

I'm sure that when pirates attack you, you get a little angry. Especially when there are other targets they could concentrate on. Like your enemies and allies.

But one thing I think would be cool, is that the pirates get a home system, or base, where you can go bringing gifts. Here you can bribe them to secretly attack your enemies, or allies if you want to. What do you think?

Bribing pirates would be a really cool feature and make a moer peaceful approach more valuable smiley: wink

The option to have a "Privateer" ship, that you control and can attack anyone seems intriguing. Great Idea!

that's a really good idea, nick. adds a level of intrigue i guess? bribing pirates would be sweet...because they can be annoying. haha. the diplomatic side of this game has lots of potential that i hope isn't wasted.

Exactly why I proposed this. I know its still just alpha, but it would be nice if the pirates would have more use.
