Sometimes I hit the retreat button only to discover there was nowhere to retreat so my fleet was destroyed anyway. Could the battle screen have an icon or warning on the retreat card if there is no place to retreat.

If you watch the map as your ship moves to that spot, if you see the shields indicating that the enemy is guarding that is how you know you won't be getting away.

Doesn't always mean you remember. Or that it was even your ship that moved.

When you hit the auto-move button, many ships move at once and it's not always clear where the event is taking place quickly.

Unless I am mistaken I have actually retreated even when shield icons are up, so I don't think thats the problem.
