Build Queue and Updating Ship Schematics

Discussing this with a friend, when in battle with another faction we would usually queue up quite a few ships, then a tech or a few would get researched and we would update schematics for the ship, but the ships currently being built aren't worth cancelling, especially the bigger ships like battlecruisers and dreadnoughts, but they don't get the new schematics. So it would be nice if the ships in queue would auto-update to the latest schematic, and if its currently being built, add a 1-5% factor increase in current production time to complete to compensate for "changing the loadout" of already placed components.

That should be only there as an option, but not automatically. I don't want to be forced to always build the latest production number in the series, when I want a mass of cheaper (and less modern) ships.

Since there are work arounds (maybe painful but exist) to the OP I tend to agree with you - option but not forced.

Vice versa it's just possible to have some dedicated less powerful ships and some series which are constantly being upgraded. I would like this in the game, in case of doubt as an option.

I agree with Morgian wholeheartedly. I would prefer that as an option under settings

I can see why you would want that, but I am not sure how realistic it is. The ship is designed and the huge construction project is underway. That seems like a bad time to insert a new design. You can always take one extra turn at the end, to retrofit it as soon as it is done.

I'd like to add to your retrofitting proposal by being able to dock in hangar and manually retrofit it using the industry output rather than paying dust, to represent the ship being rebuilt and upgraded.

+1 to this idea, and I agree with you guys, it should be an option not forced.

+1 to this idea as well

This thread is the origin of discussions about automatic/manual updates of ship designs in the building queue.

Other threads about this have been archived:

Feel free to post here about this topic here and inform yourself about the variations the threads listed above have already discussed, but don't open new suggestion threads for anything alike. smiley: wink

* Perhaps an 'Update Ship Designs' button on the system view - so you can update designs per system or not at all.

* Even better, have it in the Empire view, next to each planet in the list. Then it's all on one screen.

That way it's not forced on you, but you can still easily upgrade your pending craft.

Issue is that I'm not really sure where there's room on the UI for this.

(Also: The argument that sometimes you want an old design to combat something else is valid but I still don't think it holds a ton of water, since what if all you've upgraded was the type of weapon - a better missile, but not necessarily tweaked the loadout, say? In that instance you'll probably want to upgrade in most if not all systems, expecially if there's no real difference in the turns the new design takes to build. As for combating different enemies who have specced to different types, surely you can create different designs to combat different enemies, and split construction based on how big a threat each enemy is.)

* As for the cost of changing a design being built, I'm not sure what would be good for balance.

Perhaps halve the accumulated Industry expenditure already invested in it?

Either that or only pending ships, not ones mid-way through construction, can be swapped.

That is already the case. smiley: smile It will be in the next update.

From the release notes (hidden oh oh oh but I cannot keep a secret): "Non-built ships in the building queue can be updated to the latest ship design available, a pop-up asks the player for confirmation after creating a new design". (BAM, fired. smiley: biggrin)

With all due respect, but please, no. I don't want to see nice people like you leave smiley: smile

As for the topic: Nice to know it'll be there in the update, thanks for the info.

Whoo! Excellent news.

Pop idea is a nice way to ensure there's an option/way to maintain control.
