Separate Custom Faction Portraits/Affinities/Ship Designs

This was something I had been wondering about ever since I first saw the Sheredyn, and the release confirmed. Your ships design and faction affinity is tied to the portrait you select. I think it would be more fitting for a faction creator should the portraits, ship designs, and affinities not be locked together.



For example: I want to create a human faction styled after the cliche "Alliance." The typical good guys. For their ships, I like the United Empire ship design, but I don't want my figurehead to be the old emperor. Likewise, I don't want the UE affinity--just their ships. I think the Pilgrims leader looks more like someone who would be heading an Alliance. As for my affinity, perhaps the Amoeba, or again, the Pilgrims. But these are all separate choices for me to make.



There was one other addition to this, but I think it qualifies more as a second idea, so I'll have to go make another thread for it.

I agree with it. It's not a catastrophe but it's one of this nice to have things.



Also I am wondering if the custom faction creator is moddable so we can add our own portraits and ship designs? (For Singleplayer only of course.)

@ ursaclaire, the binding between affinities and art is done in xml files, which can be customized. It does not rely on the dev team to release any tools. Depending on how happy you are to edit binary files that came in the game, you can find more information here:

So, I imagine it's juts a matter of time until modders do their thing.

I personally don't care about the ships, but separating affinity and portraits is a must and they might as well separate the ship designs and the diplomacy holograms while doing the former smiley: smile

Edit: I just noticed that starting planet type is in fact linked to what affinity you choose. This should probably be separated as well, and turned into customisation options (it's also pretty weird you can pick the Horatio affinity for example and start out living on an Arid planet, but without the ability to colonise Arid planets).

I agree and I would add: More customization. What this means? Possibility to choose more than 1 portrait when choosing a faction and being able to make an individual portrait for the custom race - I so want an Empress instead of an Emperor. Sure modders do their thing but I think in 2012 we should have that in the game without the need of a mod. I also agree Turing that the affinity should not be linked to the start planet.

Well, part of this has already been added. The last G2G vote had an option to separate the affinities from the portraits, so...Yay! I actually had an idea that made it to a vote.



You're suggesting a different idea, though, and you might be better off making a new thread for it. However, I am fairly certain that more customization portraits has been suggested, I'm just not sure on it's status with the devs. I don't think the idea is tracked, and really, it's a small enough thing that I don't see it being worked on in the near future. I'd really just say leave it to the modders to add in more portraits and diplomacy holograms, as they really aren't all that important to the game. But would they be nice? Yeah.

Good to hear that some changes are already made, I searched but the page is still new to me, so sorry for bringing that up again. I also thought about making a thread for the option to implement individual and new portraits but I thought this topic is enough, since it's in the same region. Especially because it's such an easy task I would like to see it in the game instead of the work it takes to make all that the modding way. Maybe I am making a new thread the next days

I'd love a lot more portraits, with a few more ship designs and custom affinity that's actually different. Now add 8 different playable a.i.'s and the ability to adjust them through sliders and you have a truly unique game with an infinite number of possibilities. I do realize this isn't something that is easy to implement or balance, but it would make this game fantastic.
