Coloring ships in tactical combat

I am not interested in changing camera angles, I want to be able to see the battle and have it make sense. In fact all that jumping around makes me nauseous. I would like the ships to be distinctive so if I have a battle with two Sowers, or two Amoeba's I can differentiate between them easily.

Some of the colors are too close for that.

You mean the two shades of green?

Pink/red, Blue/blue. Some people are going to have trouble seeing the difference between them. And then they'll complain.

I've never noticed the pink/red, and blue/teal could be changed along with the greens I guess.

Purple & Grey or silver, seem to be the most likely candidates for a second shade of_____, replacements.

And I don't know about black, brown, or white.

Now it's just getting super complicated.

I thought of coloring the exhaust but did not know if different engines had different colors. There is also the issue of the color blind players not being able to differentiate between the colors. For the Amoeba's instead of insignia could they have leopard spots, zebra stripes or something similar to differentiate them?

Again, check this thread for a much-less-complicated solution: /#/endless-space/forum/28-game-design/thread/12416-camera-hotkeys

Perhaps the tint could be on the ships' engines, so if your green you ships' exhaust/thrusters/whatever will be green.

You can switch to freecam to avoid nausea.

You can also always tell which fleet belongs to which fleet - the ships firing to their left are the attacker, the ships firing to their right are the defender. You should know who's the attacker and who's the defender long before the battle begins.

Have you ever been to a game release party? I would like to see you make that explanation to a roomful of 15-18 year old's when they ask how you tell the ships apart. smiley: stickouttongue

I would ask them if any of them understand what a 4X game is. Then I would laugh at them and invalidate their arguments.

If you're a fifteen year old who can't be bothered to tell the difference between left and right, then you're a fifteen year old who is probably too impatient for the genre.

Yet it is fun to watch them try, right to the point where they come to the forum and whine about very thing.

I played the hell out of MOO when I was eight; I'm sure the fifteen-year-olds of today could handle it. Maybe you guys are speaking from personal experience as a fifteen-year-old.

Pretty much that's what it comes to.

I went to a good school and all, but I still lived in the Bronx, and no matter how impressive my school was there were kids not even a few blocks away who were... not exactly the high points of society. Growing up in an area like that, you don't really give fifteen-year-olds as much credit as you might want to.

Which is why i have posted camera controls to the idea here! smiley: approval That way every one wins, i would be happy with ethier idea, i am easy to please some times.

How about tagging the ships in the tactical combat screen with the colors of your faction? Sorry newbie, had the game for 4 days now, tried a few searches and did not find any suggestions similar to this.

I believe that based on the color you pick it applys a light tint to the ships tho it can be hard to tell. best way to tell is based on weather you started the fight or not. If you start it your all ways the one jumping in, if some one else starts it your the fleet all ready there.

Sigh, so many typo's. Comes with playing the game too much and not sleeping enough. :P

Cannot see the light tinge, also the jumping between the two sets of ships makes it hard for me to keep track. Be nice if there were insignia on the ships and we could load up custom insignia's into the game.

Agred that be cool, i really like that in SOTS 2 all the ships project holograms of there logos on different parts of the ship.

I second this motion. The tinges could definitely use more intensity. It's especially confusing when the auto camera starts jumping around.

I wouldn't mind having some of the camera angles tied to hot keys so you can change your view with out going to free camera.

This is a great idea. The 1-9 keys aren't being used, after all. And it sucks when an enemy ship gets destroyed and the camera pans to my ships shooting - I want to see the ship dying!

As for the tinges, I don't know if I would like that idea unless you could disable it. It would kind of bug me if some Amoeba ships were green and some were yellow, especially since it would seriously bother my aesthetic tastes.

Not really relevant to what I said before, but glad to see you made a thread for that suggestion.

I was thinking if we have buttons that center on the fleets we wouldn't need logos/crests to tell them apart.

True. You could even add a label in the bottom-left that names the camera view - for example, "ATTACKING FLEET (YOU)" and "DEFENDING FLEET (SOPHONS)"
