AI merging fleets before as you attack.

Has anybody noticed that when the AI attacks a system with lots of fleets that the player haven't yet merged you can't merge them before the battle, but the AI can. For example: I had just moved 2 half strength fleets to a system and was about to merge them then the AI (with a full strength fleet) attacked and killed one of them, meaning I had to pull back another fleet to save the other half strength one. But when I attack an AI system that has 3 fleets of around a 3rd of its max command points per fleet it can merge them all AFTER I press the attack button, whereas I can't!!!

For starters it shouldn't be able to do that and there should be something else for space battles like sending reinforcements into the battle if the fleet doesn't have max CP's, wondering if anybody has some ideas or if they have had the same problem? Or am I just missing something and being an idiot?

When defending, I usually send all fleets to the Hangar and pull them out once the System is attacked.

But in my opinion nothing speaks against an "automerge"-functionality that you can turn on and off.

I even abandoned my last game because the mind-numbing process of making full-sized fleets from my 652 Command-Points worth of ships was just too unattractive to do.

Yeah, I think I saw another post you did on something like that and the idea of auto-merging is good, I agree

The whole battle system needs a rework, although this is definitely something I'd like to see.

I'm not a big fan of the "automerge" idea, though. I like to run ships for combat, and then a separate group of ships for invasions. If I have a Dreadnought in orbit that itself is stronger than the AI fleet, I wouldn't want the game to merge my non-combat-capable invasion ships with the Dreadnought fleet, because then instead of losing no ships, I would lose a valuable asset.

That's why I said I'd like to have it as a toggle.

I've also thought of an idea that might work for you both, having fleets reinforce each other during battles, so say my max CPs are 12 and I have 1 7 CP fleet and 1 5 CP fleet I can choose for one to come in as a reinforcement during the battle. The AI has to do that as well though. Just a thought

This sounds like a huge change to the battle system. I think it would be better if you could just have an "edit fleets" button when you're attacked - and you can't take ships away from the fleet under attack, just add ships to it from other orbiting fleets.

But for that to work you have to get rid of the thing that makes you attack the weakest fleet in the system

Not necessarily. The weakest fleet, presumably, is a fleet without a Hero - so even if the other player dumps a ton of Destroyers into the fleet, he's still without a Hero. And the weakest fleet may also be my fleet I mentioned before, that has no weapons, just Invasion modules, meaning that even if I did dump battleships and Destroyers into the fleet, I could still use an important unit.

I think (possibly) a good idea i just had is that you could make certain fleets protect other ones, and you can have a auto-protect button (in the fleet control panel thing in the bottom left) so certain fleets would automatically protect the weakest fleet in the system. Just another thought.

I'm not so sure I like this idea.
