After playing a few games, I was wondering why the ship selection was so small.

A normal combat fleet in this game is 17-20 cp size which looks something like 1-3 dreadnoughts, 2-4 battleships, 2-4 cruisers, 2-4 destroyers and the rest light ships or however you like to make your fleets. Which is 5 different ships.( I know some ships can be retooled and not counting the colony ship)

In 2012 modern times, a fleet has a flagship, normally a carrier with fighters and fighter/bombers, with cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines.

In star wars, most fleets have the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer size ships as carriers, with tie fighters, or to fill other roles and have support ships such as light cruisers, frigates, cruisers, and escort carriers.

I know this game isn't supposed to reflect the real world or any other mainstream sci-fi theme, but I feel that this game is lacking other ships. Mainly the carrier, fighter/interceptor, fighter/bomber. (Could add a submarine, but in space that translates to a cloaking ship. Not sure if the devs want to add something like that.) Adding these ships could add more variety giving every ship its own concrete role and give the cinematic battles a little more flare.

Large Carrier/battleship - flagship.

battleship/cruiser/destroyers/ Small Carrier - escort.

destoryer/frigate - support.

fighter/intercepter and fighter/bomber - combat

Well there is one small problem, the smaller hulls become near useless in fleets. So having mixed "realistic looking" fleets will never happen. The only way to get there is to enforce fleet composition by limiting how many points can be spent per size. There have been many discussions about it with both pro and against opinions.

Indeed smaller hulls would be near useless in fleets, but Fighters could be handled in the same way as Gratuitous Space Battles where you place a squadron of fighters instead of individual ones, therefore you'd get to put in say, small munitions or cluserbombs and figher shielding on a fighter and once your system has completed producing once selection of fighters; you'd get a squadron of fighters that take up 1 CP.

Really, all I want is the inclusion of a unique capital ship, like a carrier. The current dreadnought I guess could be one, but its just a large ship that doesn't do anything besides having a few hundred tons more of stuff than the smaller ships. Actually now that I think about it, the inclusion of fighters/bombers from space trolls expansion thread gives the fighters / Bombers / interceptors and boarding parties a mobile base of operations. And then when we watch the cinematic battles of boarding parties and fighters they come out of the carrier and we all go "oooooh" and "ahhhhh."

yeah well. no. The micromanagement imposed by that up there is gameplay murdering poison. Avoid at all costs.
