This thread is the origin of discussions about pausing between combat phases.

Other threads about this have been archived:

Feel free to post here about this topic here and inform yourself about the variations the threads listed above have already discussed, but don't open new suggestion threads for anything alike. smiley: wink

Of all the poll options, I think pausing during card selection is the best. And I would think it is the easiest to implement.

My suggestion: Pause combat while the screen for chosing a battle card is displayed. So I can thoroghly read any card and chose the one I see fitting best. Maybe this pausing could be a game option for those who like the real time element?

Ordered alternatives:

a: Pause combat phase [myfavouriteone]

b: Apply default strategy

b1: Default strategy defined by empire

b2: Default strategy defined by flagship of the fleet

b3: Default strategy defined by design most often used in fleet

smiley: approval I like all of these suggestions, but agree pausing the battle while you choose a card is the best solution.

One thing I keep advocating: a 'skip the combat animations' option in the game menu. That and 'pause before each combat phase' would improve the game significantly for me. Since they should be options to check when customizing the game, in the beginning, they wouldn't bother the players who want to watch the combat animations, they wouldn't change the combat system and they wouldn't change anything in the way the devs 'see' the game.

I like this idea so long as it's an option you can select during game setup like Zenicetus mentioned. If it were present there then it would even work for multiplayer since all players ostensibly agree on each option before the game starts. I disagree with the need for a default strategy selector...uh...thing because there's already an auto resolve button in the game.

Definitely pause the game while selecting cards, at least in single-player; with no other players to annoy and no real way for me to analyze the enemy's actions, I don't see why I can't take my time to decide how I want my ships to proceed in the fight. I also like the option of having the ability to have your card selections already filled out. I'd probably make it simple, just some variable attached to the fleet.

It's also an idea that should be dead simple to program, unlike many other ideas here for game improvement. Even if it's not a game setup option, they could just hotkey a pause to the P or Pause keys. And then disable that for multiplayer.

My feeling as well. Though I will admit I am no programmer.

Agree 100%. I would like at least the option of pausing the battle while choosing my battle card. As it currently is, I tend to spend most of combat with the battle card selection window up (especially mid-game on). So I miss most of the action. A pity.

At least make it an option in the setup screen. It's jarring to have a game shift player modes like that.

It might be a good idea for multiplayer games to keep things moving along, and maybe that was the reason they did it this way? But multiplayer design shouldn't restrict the singleplayer experience. Make it optional for singleplayer games.
