Very nice thread. But I think the thread title is a bit misleading. The core topic here is about modifying saved files, right?

I was just saying this because I entered the thread thinking I could create new types of planets smiley: stickouttongue

It's not possible as each object (fleet, system or planet) can't have two descriptors of the same type (anomaly being one).

Ugh I don't want to update this behemoth. However, some things need to be said for people now poking around in the save file. Some jerk over at amp smiley: wink decided to condense the save file and remove all the beautiful formatting it used to have.

If you are continuing to modify or are new, please search for your owned planets name in the file and press -> key to navigate and keep you focused. It's a giant block of text so not exactly eye friendly. Modifying and adding moons now seems incredibly tedious as well as adding strategic resources. Please lord devs give us back our old formatting smiley: frown.

Did you change the field under systems or the one under department of interior? There is a lot of duplicated or unnormalized data, which can lead to bugs like that. I'm guessing you need to put it in both datastructures, but I did not look if the department of interior has a different structure. It works as expected when in a non-colonized system.

I thought I might do some editing, but since anomalies, luxuries and temples are obfuscated, I figured I should find out what those are first. Anyway, here is the list so other people wont have to bother with this crap.

After reading Leonoux's and KnightHawk's guides, and a day or two of dinking around the bin files, I've been able to edit several systems pretty heavily. Even managed to figure out heroes and fleets. Thanks for the guides guys. I might record a few YouTubes following Leonoux's/Knighthawk's guides, for the visual learner.

Glad you enjoyed it smiley: biggrin

My part is pretty basic, KnightHawk's guide is very nice for some of the heavier modifications.

Many Thanks for this Thread here, especially to Leonoux and KnightHawk, it helped a lot in modifying a system to what i wanted to have to.

I haven't created any new System yet, cause first i need to read a bit more about the system links, but was successful in adding new planets to my system, adding moons or switching planet specs.

Great work smiley: smile

Subtle difference, however I still think my title works fine. The topic you discussed would probably end up under "Shiny New Space Balls: Creating New Planet Types and You" but that is just four years of writing lab reports. My crowning achievements being "Who's Your Daddy? Testing for Cat Extrapair Paternity" and "Yellow Snow Cone: Effects of an Increased Sodium Diet on Kidney Filtration."

Hello Hello,

This guide is an intro to planet modding in a saved game file. A fairly simple process that can easily get overwhelming if you don't know what to look for. Many threads have been created for planet benefits and tech upgrades codes, but not a walk through to introduce you to "how to modify that save thingy everyone is poking around in."

If you are looking for tech or planet codes please go HERE. It's a great resource, only issue is the google doc doesn't seem to have any particular sort so if you are hunting for a code use ctrl+f.

In this game your planets control how fast your empire/civilization grows. Ultimately, a lucky combination of planets can create an industrial juggernaut that can create fully upgraded dreadnaughts in a turn. However, you are left at the mercy of the random number generator even if you tell the game to give big planets with lots of luxury/strategic goods. My own interest came about after a game where I was playing as a U.E. empire stuck with a nasty negative and three gas giants with only one connection to the galaxy being a wormhole. YAY turn 1.

One last thing, I'm using windows 7 and purchased through steam so my file reference points maybe different than yours. And, topics not covered but would love to explore: Adding Planets, Moons, Luxury/Strategic Goods. Backup your files or create a Test save file, I lovingly call mine...Test.

Personal Tools Used:

7-Zip

Notepad

Quick Overview:
• Find Save File: S1
  • Open File: S2
  • Find The System and Planet: S3
  • Modify Planet: S4
  • Save Changes: S5

  •
S1: Finding Your Save File

Endless Space's saved files are located under your documents folder titled Endless Space. The pathway created on my computer is:

    C:\Users\Ben\Documents\Endless Space\Save.

    S2: Opening the file

As you can see the save files are .bin and compressed, meaning if we open them now in Notepad wouldn't be a good idea. This is where I use 7-Zip to decompress the file so we can then modify it. After selecting the file right click and choose 7-Zip File Manager (NOT GUI or Console). It should create a new window with just the file inside. Double Click and it should ask what program you would like to use to open; choose Notepad. File, Save As the Notepad file and save it within your directory. You can now close the 7-Zip window as you don't need it up for now.

S3: Finding THE System and Planet

Holy batman! That's a lot of greater than and less than symbols! The game saves your information in various Departments. We are interested in the Department of the Interior. Department of Science houses your tech upgrades. It also stores your opponents information in Departments as well, luckily the game is nice and creates the users information first Empire Index="0" to be exact. Because we are the first to appear in the file using ctrl+f searching for "departmentofthe" will jump us to the appropriate section. The game orders the section by the oldest to the newest systems, based off of first colonized.

*Tip* Modding your first couple systems early on is much easier to keep straight than modifying systems late in the when you have several hundred planets or dozens of systems

*Update* System names are now stored on the save so you can now search (ctrl+f) for the system name and it should jump to the solar system you are looking for.

Each system is organized 0 to (number of planets-1), so the planet on the far left of the start system viewer is planet 0 and the planet on the far right is planet (number of planets-1). Though we are modifying the planet type, size, and planet bonus; I have yet to mess around with strategic and luxury goods or moons and if you would like bonuses to stack in respect to Fids knowing what planet has what good is necessary.

    S4: Modifying the Planet.

Though not universal usually the first field I can modify is Planet type. For this you just need to change the description of the planet so if planet X is currently written as PlanetTypeGasHydrogen and we want a jungle planet we remove GasHydrogen and replace with Jungle

Planet Type references are self-explanatory but here is a list of them.

    • Arctic
    • Arid
    • Asteroids
    • Barren
    • Desert
    • GasHelium
    • GasHydrogen
    • GasMethane
    • Jungle
    • Lava
    • Ocean
    • Terran
    • Tundra

Next is planet size. Similiar to planet type, size you just need to modify the how big or small factor. Names of each are:

    • Tiny
    • Small
    • Medium
    • Large
    • Huge

Finally modifying the planet's anomaly. If the planet already has an anomaly and you just want to change it you need only change the number to a desired one from an anomaly list. I recommended a list from the the beginning of the guide. The one anomaly I like really like to use is Garden of Eden code: 01.

If the planet doesn't have a line already for anomalies you can insert your own line adding it right after the size of the planet. You can copy & paste a line from a planet that already has one, or you can just insert:

This line is designed to add a Garden of Eden anomaly to the planet.

    S5 Saving Your Tedious Work

Obviously save the Notepad file. You can check the date modified to make sure it went through if you are paranoid. If you closed the save directory to close some windows reopen to that point again. Next open 7-zip file manager again after selecting the save file directory. It should create a new window with your saves, autosaves, and the .txt file you have been modifying. Right click the .txt file in the 7-Zip file manager. Hover over the 7-Zip entry and then select Add to Archive.

A new option panel should appear. Archive format needs to be bzip2 it should change the rest of the settings for you. Next rename the file so that the only extension is .bin. My file is always called Test.txt, after choosing the archive format it is called Test.txt.bz2. Remove the .txt.bz2 and replace with .bin so it should look like Test.bin. If you already have a file with the same name you can delete the original, it won't let you replace. Next press okay and enjoy your new saved game file. It should be roughly the same size as the autosaves.

    Ending

I hope this guide was helpful and getting you started in Save Game editing...I have personal preference to my anomaly of choice, but I tried to give as many options as I could. If you have any working methods to add planets, moons, or strategic/luxury goods please leave a detailed comment below.

    Happy Hunting,

    ~Leonoux

    Thanks for replys guys.

Edit: I got it \o/ (with help from whiskyjack)

So i found out what was causing the reference errors when adding planets, the number of planets in the system under "departmentofinterior" needs to match the number in generationoutput, %StarNameXXX. Easy enough, but i managed to miss it several times so editing my solution for anyone else that has as bad luck.

Allso many thanks for putting together this resource! smiley: smile

Thanks for the assist Knight, yet again smiley: wink

@guggis31, I assume you are trying to start your home system as the "seed system" and that is why you want to add planets? Most home system's I've sen only have 3 or 4 planets so to crank out that extra two or three would require adding planets. If not you should be able to create all those planets on a 6 planet system without any trouble using this guide and the code index I liked at the beginning.

"Though I guess the question remains were they active just not visually represented?"

    --

They worked fine in my test, I only tried sweeper. No reason it shouldn't work for the others, it's the same information the game stores.

    Hello.

Ive been trying to create a starter system for my UE game and can't seem to find out how to add planets to a system. Now I am a tad computer-illiterate so I'm guessing its not because it cannot be done but because I fail. Any help would be much appreaciated.

    What i had in mind;

    System: Sol

Sol1:Tiny lava, radiated (mercury) Sol2:Small barren, toxic (venus) Sol3:Medium terran, mineral poor/moon (earth obviously) Sol4:Medium arid*/moon (mars) Sol5:Huge gas hydrogen, EM field/moon (jupiter) Sol6:Large gas hydrogen, hyugen rings/moon (saturn)

*perhaps desert would be closer tho

Granted its a pretty terrible system but I like my immersion smiley: smile
