Created for a possible Faction Creation Competition in the future for Endless Space 2.

Species: The Legion 

Overview in general points: 

-Asteroids! Its all about Asteroids.

 in combination with strategic resources and a hostile Dust a unique form of the Dust.

(can be scrapped if you dislike those ideas)

-On rock feeding insectoid arthropods (like centipede or scorpions etc)

with a golem like appearance.

-Spaceships are based on asteroids aswell. (they use asteroids as base frames)
A Dreadnought? Put a big ass engine and a shit load of weapons on a massive space rock and you are good to go! LETS ROCK. 

- Weaponry? I could imagine some high end on acid based weapon platforms.

-The living and colonizations of asteroids, moons and gas giants
-Orignated from an extra dimensional multiuniverse Empire who fought the Endless themselfes.
-One powerful being, the living and colonizations of asteroids, moons and gas giants
-Waged war against a faction of the Endless themselfes, was altered after the Endless used HOSTILE Dust against the Legion,
-Mastery and use as a weapon of the hostile Dust. Seeks Truth, seeks Wisdom of the Endless to remove all undesirable side effects of the hostile Dust
to unlock its true potential rebuilding the glory of its former empire and to bring the galaxy the god and the nation it requieres. In this and in all other universes.

-Can and have to blow up planets to create new asteroid fields as their most benefical habitable space.
-Uses hostile Dust instead of normal Dust.
-Infests other systems with HOSTILE Dust to bring chaos and weakness to all hostile aliens.

-Not food but Strategic ressources and  (such a Titanium hexaferrum etc) are used to grow your basic Legion population of your empire. 

What does that all mean:

-Appearance: The Legion comes in all shapes and forms of arthropods and is a extradimensional genderless synthetic race of arthropods which is controled by single being called "The Nameless"
-Governmental system:The "Nameless" is a single indiviudal which inhabitats every single Legionary who exists.
-Home Planet Type: Asteroids/Moons and gas giants

 There could also be different ones of them like Standard asteroid belts like in the solar system, ice belts out past the frost line, and circumstellar debris/dust disks in young systems.For example having a standard asteroid belt near the habitable zone could provide different bonuses. 
-Diplomatic Alignment: Protectionism; Unknown
-Gameplay: Anti-Terraforming(Xenoforming), Mastery of the hostile Dust and the strategic Resources.
-Main Victory Type:  YOUR VISION their future.

Affinity :

1. ASTEROIDS ASTEROIDS ASTEROIDS- Thewhole race theme is based on the life on asteroids and can also live on gas giants.
2. Xenoforming ("in case of the Legion this means the transformation of habitable planets into lifeless asteroid fields or gas giants)
The Legion suffers HUGE penalties when colonizing normal planet types making the creation of new asteroid fields essential for its survival.

Side Note: This would logical wise force the implementation of a Asteroid terraforming option for the other races to prevent scorched earth tactis (And we all want a "terraform asteroids tech" for all the other races since a long time didnt we?) ;D
Also we could add an option to "catch" Dust rich asteroids and form new asteroid fields to create a another peaceful way to create new habitats for the Legion enabling them to play as isolationists.

 The whole race theme is based on the life on asteroids also gas giants could be added as possible habitat.

-3. The Legion consists out of mindless shells making them valuable slaves pops for other factions while themselfes having a unique political

government to reflect issues in co-existing with xenos.

-4. The hostile Dust principle: Only race which uses a unique kind of Dust simply called "hostile Dust" and uses it as a storable substitution instead of  
and Influence.The Legion has to BUILD(let grow) its population by using hostile Dust (special programmed Dust nanobots)  as rawmaterial in combination with strategic resources using it as "nectar" for its silicon based larvas. 

-5. Live among the Stars: „The Legion“ can colonise asteroids and gas giants without any technologie.

Overall Design: 

They represent a arthropod species like killer bees,sea crabs,scorpions,centepides and ants from the size of a horse up to the size of small spaceships with a very "rock-ish,stone-ish,asteroid-ish" looking design.

The Legion comes in all shapes and forms of arthropods . They are silicon based and look like they were made out of asteroids.

Humans would describe them as large on asteroids living insectoid golems.

They are a non carbon based extradimensional lifeforms that are controlled by a single identity called "The Nameless"

They do not have actual DNA but an equivalent based on hostile Dust as they are related to the Endless themselfes.
In short they are one giant golem machine which grows and evolves like a biological being.

SPACESHIPS
(See images and even more infos in the second post in this thread called "Visuals")

Short overview:
Spaceships are based on asteroids aswell.
A Dreadnought? Put a big ass engine and even bigger weapons on massive space rock and you are good to go! LETS ROCK.

Capitalship design: Capital ships of the Legion are supossed to be large hollowed asteroids equiped with large (more primitive) engines on the rear because they were designed as interdimensional conquerors not interstellar ones and a even bigger weaponphalanx at the front. Their capital ships should be basically small asteroids turned into carriers and dreadnoughts with a xeno-ish appearance.

Color design: If i think about the legion I see a overall synthetic but note complete mechanical appearing theme in the natural colors of asteroids added with shades of gold/ember/ orange to give them their dust/honey bee like flavour.

"The Legion"
An attempt of summarizing my fully fleshed out Lore Chapters about their History (still recommending reading the Chapters when you find some spare time to fully understand what the Legion realy is): 

The silicon based ancestors(so called Acteons)  of The Legion originated from a different universe without any hyperstrings and therefore  offered very limited  living space. They fed on strategic resources and were tunneling through planets and asteroids to reproduce themselfes.
They began to construct portals into other universes and started to expand in a different way conquering a multi-universal empire.
At some point in the history they encountered "our" universe and as fate willed an isolated enclave of the Endless.
They declared war on the Endless but hadn't planned on encountering such a powerful thing as the Dust which the Endless used as a weapon against them.
But in the end the Endless were only few and they were fighting an empire possesing hundreds of worlds in hundreds of universes.
As a last resort the Endless programmed the Dust so that it would behave like a virus, killing all Acteons (ancestors of the Legion)  but leaving their bodys intact, so that the Virtual Endless could upload themselfes into their bodys and use them as handy tools.
Something went terrible wrong and lead to the death of all Virtual Endless of the enclave who tryed to load themselfes up and also to the downfall of the

cross-universe Empire of the Legion. During that process some new form of live was created. The souls of the of the virtual Endless were devoured  and so the Nameless was born. A living "god" ruling over a race of  mindless stillbirths.

LEADERSHIP :

Monocracy of the Nameless

At first organics have to understand that what they call the Legion species is nothing less then a single gigantic body for just one single individual being „The Nameless“.
Image you would wake up tomorrow and suddenly you were in control of all the bodys of your entire species, the minds of their former owners just vanished into nowhere.
That you could not only navigate and control them but also that you would see,fell and smell anything they can and in addition using all their brains to your capacity. You would be the lifeform with the biggest „body“ in the history of the known universe.
The Legion is the body and the Nameless is its soul...its only one.
If you would ask one of those Legionary limbs what it is doing "at the moment" it would take estimated over 450 solar standard years to transmit this information via on sonicwaves based communication.
This is the easiest way to explain what the Nameless is.
But actually his nature of existance is so far beyond those of man they cannot even imagine it.


SOCIETY (OR the lag of one)

The definition of an society is:
The aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community.

In the Legion there are no "people" there is only the omnipresent Nameless who is controlling all the Legionaries no matter where and no matter to what purpose.
Legionaries are nothing more then platforms to the Nameless used as tools and their brain capacity used to enhance the Nameless intellect.
The Nameless is a  supreme being cursed to everlasting soltitude.
As soon as The Nameless tries to breed new legionaries in their moment of birth.
Their "souls"  are just dragged into the infinite nothing of the Nameless nature...Stillbirths.
