Humankind Feature Focus 06: Immersive Sounds

Hello everybody,

it’s been a while since we could last share a Feature Focus with all of you, so instead of dwelling on how the change to Work From Home has affected how we create these videos, let’s just dive right in:

The sound is as important to immersing yourself in a video game as the visuals are. Little pulls you out of an experience as quickly as what you hear not matching what you see. So we wanted to make sure that what you hear in Humankind always reflects the environment you see.

We have recorded many hours of sounds for this, and have combined them to create appropriate soundscapes for the different landscapes you can find in the eleven biomes in Humankind. The sound system is also dynamic and adjust to what you are looking at and how far away it is, so for example as you pan around the map and move closer to the ocean, you will hear the crashing of waves, as you zoom in on a jungle, the sounds of animals will fade in.

However, all of this is best experienced by checking out the two videos below with more details and examples!

We hope you enjoyed this little look at the sounds of Humankind!

Wow, that is so amazing. So much effort for all the noises in the game. I'm totally excited about the game.

PS: that sounds insanely good!

Soundscape and graphics are just perfect ... I wanted to put the soundscape video on another screen while I was working and when I looked at this screen, I couldn't take my eyes off it.

I listen to the sounds in a loop ...

It makes me so impatient for the release of the game!

Hmmm... maybe, for one playthrough, I might turn the music down to just appreciate the environmental sounds!

I love it! Keep up the good work! (And please don't hurt yourselves near volcanos, I was worried during that scene...)

The quality of the product depends on the quality of its parts. A good approach! Should be atmospheric!

It's going to be such a great game ! The more is released about it, the less I can wait to play it :)

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure the video "Soundscapes To Study To" is accurately named. I keep trying to listen to it at work, but the video of the landscapes is too distractingly beautiful, lol!

Looking forward to chilling after work and enjoying this!

I have a feeling with all the interaction with environments and experts in the making of this game, the credits is going to be massive!

Holy **** that's amazing. I was hoping for good audio, but once again Amplidute has gone above and beyond what's needed. We're going to get real volcano noises, it's crazy! Wurm Online remains one of my favorite games simply for the ambient noises it has: wind going through trees, water lapping on the shore, etc. Humankind just might be the first to not only rival, but beat that.

I'm simply floored. Waterfalls make waterfall noises?! I guess I have to find a waterfall to build my capitol near.
