Humankind OpenDev Begins Now!

Hey everybody !

The time we have all been waiting for has finally arrived: the Humankind OpenDev period starts now!

If you've been selected to participate in the first scenario, you will soon receive a welcome email. Make sure to check our spam folder too! We all know how zealous those filters can be. Check back tomorrow as well, as the emails may take up to 24h to arrive. Once you know you've been selected, go to your Games2Gether Profile page and look for the OpenDev Reward at the top of the page. Redeem this reward to add Humankind OpenDev to your Steam library and be among the first people to play Humankind!

If you haven't been selected yet, don't give up hope! We will ad more players over the course of OpenDev, so you may still get to participate with the second or third scenario, and you can even still sign up! In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for a lot of fresh Humankind content, as OpenDev participants are free to share their experiences or livestream. You can also join us for streams on twitch every week, starting today at 6PM CEST.

A few key points to remember:

  • Share your experience! - The contents of OpenDev are not under NDA, so feel free to stream or make videos! (Please do mention that this is an early version of the game, though.)

  • OpenDev Access needs to be redeemed through Games2Gether - Access to OpenDev is distributed through our Games2Gether Reward system, so double-check that your Steam account is linked.

  • Check the OpenDev subforum - There is a forum for OpenDev participants to discuss their experience and post feedback. If you cannot see the forum, please log out and back in again.

  • Scenarios are time limited – Each will be available from Thursday at 15:00 BST / 16:00 CEST / 07:00 PDT through Monday at the same time

  • The scenarios end with a survey - We know surveys can be boring, but please take your time to fill out the survey after you finish a scenario. The survey is vital for the feedback gathering of OpenDev.

  • We will grant access to additional applicants with each new scenario – Keep checking their email in the coming weeks!

  • Getting access later grants access to all previous scenarios – In fact, we would prefer that even if you join later you play the scenarios in order as they have a bit of an tutorial progression to them

  • Applications will remain open during the entire process – Even if you weren’t selected for this first round, you can apply now for a chance to be included in the 2nd or 3rd wave of players

We're thrilled by the interest you have all shown in OpenDev and are looking forward to your feedback. Let's make Humankind a great 4X game together!

We hope you'll have fun with this first taste of what the game has to offer,

-- The Amplitude Team

Got the chance to play, did 2 runs in a row.
The map is really beautiful, feels really rougth and ancient.
Fog of war and moving units feels really organic.

Roaming mammoths and deers where easy prey.
(Maybe too easy, at one point a lone scout took down a mammoth all by himself, probably will make him a general at some point for such deeds).

As the dev team asked, I recorded the first run, you can see it here but I'm no twitcher so no voice-over.
Few suggestions:
- In the UI when moving pop from Agri to Indus, I couldn't know at a glance if I was moving 1 2 or 3 pop.
- When a battle took place, I love being able to zoom out, and check the rest of the board, but I had no quick way to see how the battle was going.
- Are random encounters like tribal villages in civ 6 or do they respawn at random?
- Really cool natural wonders, but do they provide bonuses if I settle near them?

Thanks DevTeam, vous déchirez*

(*you rock)

@Annihilat0r  even if you are selected for the next round, you will still have access to the previous scenario :)

@Meedoc good to know, thanks for the info! May I ask, what the reason behind having multiple rounds is then? Are you planning to make incremental changes to the scenarios based on user feedback from the previous rounds? Or is it more a logistics question of not having to evaluate all the feedback at once?

As far as I know, logistics are definitely a factor, since this is a new approach to how we handle the community driven development.

The God of AI hasn't noticed me for the first scenario... I must sacrifice more bits and bytes at the shrine I guess...

Bummer, I personally found the first scenario to be the most interesting one, but it seems I did not get in. I'll keep my fingers crossed for round 2+3 though :)

I think you'll be able to go back and play the first scenario, even after the next one is released.

That is correct :-) If you are not getting access this time around, you can always go back and play the 1st scenario if you get access at a later point :-)

I just wanted to say that I had issues redeeming the open dev on firefox but as soon as I switched to chrome I had no issues. The issue was when it was asking for permission for Sega to redeem keys on my account it would come back to the games2gether forum and say there was an error at this time. If this persists please contact your administrator. Once I tried it in chrome, I had no issues whatsoever.

First of all, thank you for allowing me to have the chance to help you all out! Very appreciative of that. Secondly and more importantly, I think, is giving you all a HUGE congrats on this! This is going to be an amazing game and can't wait for it! It's like Civilization and Endless hooked up and this is their baby. This is a very welcomed game as of lately, I am not satisfied with the direction that the Civilization series is going in and want that void filled; this looks to be that game.  Again, thank you very much and can't wait to play the whole game. :)

I got the invite, and I feel so much joy. And especially after today, when it was very exhausting and frantic in work, it felt like a gentle embrace.

Thank you very much for the chance, I am going to spend my free time during weekend on it, and give you some thorough feedback.

Yes!

Good luck everyone for next round.
