Victor OpenDev Available Now

Over the course of Humankind’s development, we have given our players several opportunities to try the game and let us know what they think through the OpenDev program. Every time, we saw valuable survey data, interesting discussions, and constructive feedback. And every time, the OpenDev period was almost immediately followed by one question: When will be the next time we can test the game and give feedback?

The answer to this question is as simple as it is exciting: Right now!

From Thursday, April 22nd to Monday, May 3rd, the new Victor OpenDev is available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. In this OpenDev scenario, you will have up to 150 turns to guide your civilization from the Neolithic Era to the end of the Early Modern Era. Once you finish the game, you will be given a chance to fill out a survey, as in the previous OpenDev.

Those of you who have participated in OpenDev before may notice that this scope is very similar to the Lucy OpenDev. While we know that our fans are eager to try the final two eras of the game, we want to focus on the content we shared before and be able to compare the feedback, as we have made many improvements to the game since the Lucy OpenDev. Here are just a few examples:

  • Rebalanced game pace, economy, and cultures
  • Improved District placement User Interface
  • Improved territory and outpost management
  • Improved Diplomacy User Interface
  • New Unit Classes like Anti-Cavalry

So how do you play the Victor OpenDev to give us your feedback? There are a few ways to get your hands on it:

  • If you have played the Lucy OpenDev
    1. Go to your rewards page on Games2Gether and resync your Steam-link with the button at the top
    2. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your library ready to be installed and launched
    3. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
    4. NOTE: Somey keys from the Twitch Drop campaign may have been revoked. If you got access to Lucy through Twitch Drops before, and cannot access the Victor OpenDev after following the Troubleshooting steps, your key may have been revoked. In that case, you can earn a new key through the current Twitch Drop campaign.
  • If you have pre-purchased Humankind on Steam
    1. Log in to your Games2Gether Account
    2. Go to your profile page and link your Steam account
    3. Go to your Rewards page and claim the OpenDev reward at the top of the page
    4. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your library ready to be installed and launched
    5. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
  • If you have pre-purchased Humankind on Epic Games Store
    1. The Victor OpenDev should be ready to be installed and launched from your EGS library
  • If you have not pre-purchased Humankind on either store and have not played the Lucy OpenDev
    1. Log in to your Games2Gether Account
    2. Go to your profile page
    3. Go to your Account Settings
    4. Link your Twitch account; you will be prompted to log in to Twitch to confirm your identity
    5. Watch a total of 3 hours of Humankind on participating channels (watch time does not need to be consecutive)
    6. Claim the Twitch Drop
    7. Go to your Rewards page and claim the OpenDev reward at the top of the page
    8. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your Steam library ready to be installed and launched
    9. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
  • If you are having trouble accessing the Victor OpenDev after these steps, please check the Troubleshooting Steps first.

Speaking of Twitch drops, this OpenDev presents another chance to earn the Influencer Avatars through drops on their participating channels. Log in to your Games2Gether account and make sure your Twitch account is linked as described above, and you’re set to earn the avatar drops as you watch their channels. If you cannot catch their streams live this time around, no reason to worry though: there will be other chances to earn these Avatars, and you will still be able to play against them after release.

Go check out the Victor OpenDev, and let us know what you think in the survey and the Victor OpenDev Forum.

And have fun with Humankind!

I'm curious, it says it's only available on windows, but I could have sworn that it said that the full game would be both windows and Mac, was I wrong? or is it that the open devs aren't for mac but the base game is?

Thank you for taking your time to read this.

Bought Humankind some time ago on Steam,

Tried everything: syncing, unlinking and re-linking steam, changing steam privacy... still no Victor Opendev reward in rewards, is it somehow limited?

I thought I missed something because I can see it is gotten on Drops, but I forgot to redeem it on https://www.games2gether.com/profile/me/rewards page. So, I redeemed it and it showed up on my Steam Library.

So... I've been notified of drops on twitch but not on here. My twitch and steam are both linked. Now what?

Guess my key was revoked, which is a shame because last time I finished the game 30 mins after the end of the trial, couldn't give my feedback because of it, and had to resort to social media to provide it, which was entirely ignored :-/

Not going to risk the same again, by the time I earn a twitch drop it will be too late to play it through and return feedback, and I'm not going to buy the game unless I can play through open dev again to confirm the previous issues are fixed so Humankind scrubbed from wishlist.

So, I guess those of us who got the Twitch drop are shafted, huh? No response on how to actually get it linked to Steam, even though the instructions above clearly don't work.

Thanks for this Open Dev again.

But, this process to add it to Steam is every time a torture. Where to click, how often, etc... why is it so complicated?!

After having a few issues getting steam to recognize that I own the game, I finely got it downloaded and got to start playing.

I have played 2 days now, and here are some thoughts.

I like the intuitive nature of the UI in most places.

They seem to have done a lot of work in getting tutorial information out and available to new players.

I like the evolution through the ages.

some things that need some work -

-The UI related to diplomacy and war does not work quite like it says in some places and is not intuitive in other areas where some more instruction is needed.

-There is an issue with the tutorial on hunting mammoths that caused a shadow of my units to sit in the same spot the tutorial showed me where to move them for 35+ turns (I did not actually fight the mammoth or even more the troops there, it was the recommended location that was shown).

-Knowing how to fight a deer did not prepare me for the full 8 rounds of combat when my neighbor came to take my city with a lot of troops and then i had to figure out how to move reinforcements and then found out that troops that are moving in from outside the city and not part of the defending army are actually excluded from the fight even though they are in the area.

It took quite a few turns to figure out how to even move one outside troop into the battle field to support my defending units as the deployment mechanics excluded them in the planning phase and then the battle mechanics did not allow them to enter the arena of battle. I do not know what is the problem area - not being allowed to support a battle with more troops, or being able to move a troop in when it was not initially part of the army.

is it possible to give a bit more time to play and test it? May 3rd is already tomorrow and this might push people on a night marathon to play through on a Sunday in Europe.
Personally Steam has not showed me the this open dev announcement until today. @The-Cat-o-Nine-Tales

Coming from years of CIV 5, I am confident we have found a successor. This game was a blast to learn (3 playthroughs @ 25hours on humankind difficulty) and play over the past couple of days. The way you expand cities, and combine cultures and economic zones, is soooooooooo innovative, the replay value is going to be nuts. Strategic decisive battles are also enjoyable; more than just 1 different elevation and countless unique units. Definitely some minor bugs surrounding battles but i'm confident with a team that is putting in this much work and allowing players to be apart of it's making we will see something very polished in  August :).
