Victor OpenDev Available Now

Over the course of Humankind’s development, we have given our players several opportunities to try the game and let us know what they think through the OpenDev program. Every time, we saw valuable survey data, interesting discussions, and constructive feedback. And every time, the OpenDev period was almost immediately followed by one question: When will be the next time we can test the game and give feedback?

The answer to this question is as simple as it is exciting: Right now!

From Thursday, April 22nd to Monday, May 3rd, the new Victor OpenDev is available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. In this OpenDev scenario, you will have up to 150 turns to guide your civilization from the Neolithic Era to the end of the Early Modern Era. Once you finish the game, you will be given a chance to fill out a survey, as in the previous OpenDev.

Those of you who have participated in OpenDev before may notice that this scope is very similar to the Lucy OpenDev. While we know that our fans are eager to try the final two eras of the game, we want to focus on the content we shared before and be able to compare the feedback, as we have made many improvements to the game since the Lucy OpenDev. Here are just a few examples:

  • Rebalanced game pace, economy, and cultures
  • Improved District placement User Interface
  • Improved territory and outpost management
  • Improved Diplomacy User Interface
  • New Unit Classes like Anti-Cavalry

So how do you play the Victor OpenDev to give us your feedback? There are a few ways to get your hands on it:

  • If you have played the Lucy OpenDev
    1. Go to your rewards page on Games2Gether and resync your Steam-link with the button at the top
    2. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your library ready to be installed and launched
    3. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
    4. NOTE: Somey keys from the Twitch Drop campaign may have been revoked. If you got access to Lucy through Twitch Drops before, and cannot access the Victor OpenDev after following the Troubleshooting steps, your key may have been revoked. In that case, you can earn a new key through the current Twitch Drop campaign.
  • If you have pre-purchased Humankind on Steam
    1. Log in to your Games2Gether Account
    2. Go to your profile page and link your Steam account
    3. Go to your Rewards page and claim the OpenDev reward at the top of the page
    4. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your library ready to be installed and launched
    5. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
  • If you have pre-purchased Humankind on Epic Games Store
    1. The Victor OpenDev should be ready to be installed and launched from your EGS library
  • If you have not pre-purchased Humankind on either store and have not played the Lucy OpenDev
    1. Log in to your Games2Gether Account
    2. Go to your profile page
    3. Go to your Account Settings
    4. Link your Twitch account; you will be prompted to log in to Twitch to confirm your identity
    5. Watch a total of 3 hours of Humankind on participating channels (watch time does not need to be consecutive)
    6. Claim the Twitch Drop
    7. Go to your Rewards page and claim the OpenDev reward at the top of the page
    8. The Victor OpenDev will appear in your Steam library ready to be installed and launched
    9. If it does not, go to the Steam Store page of the Victor OpenDev and click the Play button to start the installation
  • If you are having trouble accessing the Victor OpenDev after these steps, please check the Troubleshooting Steps first.

Speaking of Twitch drops, this OpenDev presents another chance to earn the Influencer Avatars through drops on their participating channels. Log in to your Games2Gether account and make sure your Twitch account is linked as described above, and you’re set to earn the avatar drops as you watch their channels. If you cannot catch their streams live this time around, no reason to worry though: there will be other chances to earn these Avatars, and you will still be able to play against them after release.

Go check out the Victor OpenDev, and let us know what you think in the survey and the Victor OpenDev Forum.

And have fun with Humankind!

First thoughts after playing it for half a day.  Lots more technical issues that weren't in Lucy.  Previews for battles stay on the map indefinitely, as well as map pings sometimes.  The video overall is much more glitchy for no good reason.  Really was looking forward to this, but sadly it's getting worse, not better.  The actual gameplay seems very much better and more balanced, but it's hard to play with all the extra artifacts cluttering up the screen at many spots.

Anyone had luck with the access via watching Twitch for 3 hours? Do you have to watch a live stream from one of the approved streamers or do archived streams work?

Feedback from two playthroughs:

* Overall excellent fun, pretty much anything I don't talk about is great!

* Territory lines float in mid-air. Is it possible to lock them to the ground?

* City (farms/markets/etc) tiles that are adjacent to mountains float in free-space.

* Ranged cavalry that can strike twice in combat is OP as all hell.

*  Ability to press a button (ie Spacebar) that will speed up previously moved unit speed (similar to Total War)

* Request that you can stack building requests for outposts instead of them wiping.

* Is it possible to move the camera in full 360 vice only 30 deg offset left and right?

Aside from that, awesome stuff team - really glad you took the time to delay the game, get the community involved. :)

If you having problems do all the following:

1. Update steam account to games2gether linking (this bit is simple).

2.The problem is the reward page you are returned to is not updated. So you need to make it refresh by leaving the reward page and returning to it (present button at top of page).

3. You should see Victor open dev on reward page now. Click it and redeem it to steam after this leave and return to the reward page and check its says redeemed (if its not redeemed redeem it again until it goes though).

4. Once it says redeemed go to steam and tell steam to install or update your old lucy dev install.

I've watched over 3 hours and I still haven't gotten the drop for the Victor OpenDev. My accounts are linked but I don't see any progress in the twitch drop inventory.

EDIT: After refreshing my twitch connection from the account page, it started logging time for the drops.

Found a load crashing bug in the game where if you want to load an autosave turn, it would crash the game but not close it, is more like it would loop and stay in the main menu of the game. and even if u try to load another autosave load it would stay as in the main menu unless you close the game.

The auto load crash happened on turn 54 where i did a mistake so i wanted to go back a turn and well I hit the load auto save but instead of loading the game it went to main menu. no matter what other load i choosed it stayed there in that main menu screen where you choose your civilization to start the game

Same here. I had since uninstalled the Lucy installation from Steam, maybe this only works if you still had it installed?

I've resynched my Steam account and Twitch account to the G2G account, restarting Steam client or trying to play from the Steam web store doesn't work. Victor is not in my Steam library, and no play button on the Victor Steam page.

Same issue here. On Steam help/support page it says that my key was revoked on 01.12.2020

Is there a way to play the free opendev version of the game via steam without watching three hours of devs videos? I haven't pre-purchased the game neither did I play Lucy.

Pressing ESC skips the intro video.

Just finished the first playthrough with Egyptians and the default difficulty. 4288 fame and 1st place. It was exciting learning the ropes. I made the English my vassals which alone gave me +1000 coin in Middle Ages which is ridiculous. The pacing got bit too fast towards the 150th turn and the rules of Siege are still a bit unclear.

For those having problems getting the reward to show up in G2G even after pre-purchasing and syncing, you need to ensure that your Steam privacy settings allow public profile and public game detail access.  Once I changed this and synced G2G with my steam account the reward showed up immediately.

You can edit your privacy settings on this page: https://steamcommunity.com/my/edit/settings

I am having an issue where my map keeps moving on its own when I start a new game. Does anyone know a solution to fix this? None of keys are sticking on my keyboard and my mouse is fine.

The directions missed a step.

I was having trouble getting this to work despite having played LucyOpenDev. For me, it was just that I had to refresh my browser after syncing my Games2Gether profile with Steam. Prior to refreshing the page, there was no HumanKind Victor Open Dev to select, on and Steam it was just showing me the option to purchase (even though I obviously already pre-purchased Humankind).

Unrelated: I submitted a 27-page document of feedback in LucyOpenDev but never heard a word from the developers confirming they read it or did anything with it. Is this typical? How do I know it was used or appreciated. I won't go through the trouble again unless I know it was actually useful.

Victor OpenDev is crashing on the final load screen, at anywhere between 60-80% loaded.  A small white Unity msg window pops up each time, at which point the music stops; once the blue load bar on that small window completes then the OpenDev load screen disappears and I'm back to Steam.  I have attached a screen shot.

I had the same problem with the Lucy Opendev, but I can't remember what I did to fix that, after 3 days of struggle.

So far I have tried this:

1. verified the integrity of the game on steam

2. set all of the graphics settings in game setup to the lowest level
