were there already multiple invite waves or is it still the first wave? 

How likely is it to get an invite for someone fairly new? 

The second wave was sent out yesterday/today.

so obviously waiting for the next one :(

For the moment, we had three waves, two for the first scenario and one yesterday for the second scenario.

A second wave for the second scenario will be sent soon :)

I just got my invite for the 2nd wave and it's downloading in Steam now... Very happy and excited to try it out!

I'm in for the Second Wave and couldn't be happier about it! My most anticipated game of 2021 and I get to take part in its development! How cool is that? Thanks, Amplitude, I'll do my best too.

Yep. Just for the record, they're called waves but it's usually instantenous. At 15:00 BST, Thursday and Friday, the lucky ones will have a Humankind Open Dev key in the G2G rewards (that giftbox icon in the upper right corner). The mails can get delayed a bunch but if you have that and/or can access the hidden feedback forum, you are in. If not, you'll have to wait for the next week.
