Yikes, seems like "oil scarcity" has found it's way to this game too?! Sigh.... Can this be fixed with mods? My first game had 2 on a normal sized map for 6 players. I ended up with one. The game ended before I could use a single oil based unit anyway. Oil is not some rare thing in nature. I know some people have the impression that it is some rare resource, I won't get into that one, for obvious reasons, but if they want the game to be more conflicting and challenging, the game is hard enough. We cannot have conflict with rocks stuffed in pillows in the modern era.
They could at least give us a resource abundance setting we can adjust to our preferences. That way those that want to fight over a crumb, and not see a single advanced unit for the game can do so at their leisure and others can have a full game experience of all units and the entire tech tree.
During beta I saw potential for this being an issue when I noticed the amount of horses on the map as well as copper.
I would need more games to know for sure, but I was able to get horses and copper fairly well. Aluminum was super rare at the end of my first game just like oil. Uranium seemed so-so, but I did not have even one on my wide empire. Looking at this thread and the feedback, seems like there is an issue. Hopefully the devs will do something about it. If they don't I hope a mod can give us an adjustable slide or set options on resources.
The only downside of mods addressing the issue is that it would likely negatively impact trade and the value of commodities. Another thing is that they should rethink the requirements for certain units on oil, uranium, aluminum, etc. At current, you would need to snowball and roll up at least half the Earth to have full access. At that point, the game is likely over and the ending a formality. You have everything and the poor AIs have no chance of winning for the next 100+ turns. That is boring and reeks of Civ6 style gameplay. If the AIs have decent access to resources, they can continue to mount a serious fight against the human, making the game a good fight all the way to the end. The same can be said of a human player that had a rocky start, they can still finish, instead of re rolling for a better map.
Like the game but don't like the random nature of starts, resources and events. Too uneven and causes many re-starts. Needs more QA testing and I guess we're it!
I had exactly the same problem. I've explored the whole map and there was only 1 oil source, located in the north pole. Unfortunately that lack of resource made my late game extremely lame. Se movement is too slow, it took me a whole era to take a unit there and settle a city to explore the oil.
Even worse, later I find out that to resume the space race, I need 2 copies of the oil, which didn't exist.

It definitely sucks especially when you are trying to do a mission to mars. other than that i havent had too many problems with bugs aside from the occasional one here and there requiring an autosave load

Do you sleep or eat? 10 games? I am unemployed atm (by choice) and I have completed 3 games (huge map, Slow pace) Both games were 2 oil, but the beta seems it does fix things even on an existing game, a 3rd oil popped up after I installed it. You must mash that end turn button, a huge map slow game usually takes me 3 days.
It is fixed in the beta. Gotta start a new map though.

Awesome news. Thanks guys for letting us know. I see two betas, I will pick the highest version number and hope that was the right one. The Humankind Devs sure are fast. Why? I will help you: yes, these guys are a trillion times more responsive and caring of their product than the Firaxians, who are shameless to say the least at this point and are losing very long term customers/fans like myself fast. To each what is deserved.
The Amplitude guys have truly created their Magnum Opus. Does it have issues? Yes, of course. But the gem is there, and given that it can only improve (although, again, the Firaxians managed to even go against that) from now on, things look great, especially given the dedication the Amplitudians (LOL) are showing.

LOL! I was trying to be nice. To be fair, Firaxis isn't the only company that ignores their own community (or allegedly selectively only listen to obscure requests from a random player (eg zombies and vampires)). There are sooo many more companies we can add to the list, but at the end of the day, us gamers have to vote with our money. We have to support the good ones as much as possible and pray some board of directors do not ruin them in some way. If anything, it seems all gaming companies will end this way if they find too much success initially. I don't take it personally anymore, but I still cannot help but feel somewhat salty about it.
