I don't know if this has been addressed or not but I was wondering if there will be "great" people/heroes in the game, and if so here are some questions I have:

  • Will you only receive great people from the Culture you choose? i.e if i choose the Romans in the Classical era, will I only get famous roman great people?

  • Are there different types of great people? i.e General, Artist, Admirals etc.

    • If so, are we only going to get great people that pertain to our affinity? Militarist will get Generals, Aesthetes get Artist/Sculptors/Writers/Musicians, Builders will get Engineers, Scientists will get Researchers and Expansionist can probably get Administrators/ Generals (just a few ideas). I think this is a way to really enhance and "boosts" the affinity we choose. I'm not saying that Scientist will only get researchers, but rather "Great" researchers while other culture get "regular" researchers.

    • Let's say there is a situations where you are in battle as a Militarist culture going against another culture. Both have armies with generals however the other culture has more men, but because you're a militarist culture with a "Great General" playing field is leveled out because of special boosts the "Great General" gives you.

Another great idea I had, which is think would be harder to implement, would be able to give people an opportunity to create their own Great people. For instance in some gameplay we have seen mechanics like Babylon's Astronomy house the attributes of the EQ are:

  1. +2 Food per Researcher

  2. +2 Science per adjacent Farmer Quarter

  3. +1 Researcher slot in Settlement

Maybe you can give particular attributes to these Researchers, so they can add additional boosts for the rest of the era i.e +0.5/1 Science for every excess amenity in Settlement or +2 science but -1 Stability. Of course there will be predetermined attributes you can choose from. Then names can be just randomly generated from a pool of names that were common in the culture (both male and female) . I think this will really enhance the idea of "leaving YOUR mark on humankind". I feel like this is a bit micromanaging, but in a way that feels more significant and can really have an impact on your gameplay by adding the choice of variety and specialization.

This idea might be ridiculous, but I'm curious to what you guys think about it, and how Great People are going to be implemented if they are going to be implemented.

I kinda feel the concept of "Great People" would be a bit too much ripping off Civ. Additionally, since we have varied historical records about different cultures, it might be difficult to get equal representation for all cultures and we'd end up with a lot of GP from the more successful or enduring cultures. How many great ancient South American or Oceanian people can we name? A bunch of rulers I guess, but not necessarily many artists or scientists even though those have probably existsted. When going around 1st world, there's a whole lot. A matter of surviving historical records and as the game seems to put emphasis on real historical background, coming up with fictional names doesn't seem right.

But more importantly I'm not sure if individual persons are fitting for the game theme. Humankind seems to have this thing going on where empires rise and fall, it's the culture, the way of life that preserves. Single people are not important, it's the bigger theme around a certain population that has the spotlight. If you have a Roman culture and then adopt Mongols on the next era, it's representing Mongolian hordes overwhelming the Romans and giving this-and-that results. Ghengis or Nero aren't important, it's the way of life those cultures had.
