UI/UX suggestion to improve the city's panel construction queue

Hello all,


This has been reported numerous times, the city's panel construction queue gets cluttered pretty quickly and easily once you start planning constructions (quarters/infrastructures/units, etc ...), the more you advance in eras.


The idea just popped up as I found myself once again "fighting" to place my constructions in the right order in the queue, having to use the slider to go right and left to pick and move the construction items in the queue, and realized that if the construction queue could be expanded -- in the same way we can minimize/expand the constructions items (shared projects, districts, infrastructures, units, public ceremonies) -- this would solve the problem.


Here's an attempt to draw/materialise the suggestion, with the current available UI, the expand button would open the construction queue with as many rows as there are items in the queue. Minimizing the queue would bring back the construction queue with the horizontal slider :



The expanded queue should probably be limited to 4-5 rows at maximum, in order to still diplay the constructions and completed tabs in the city's panel, with its vertical slider.


Ultimately, this would really help moving the construction items around to place them in the desired order.

Upvoted, this would be nice.


Also I would love a hotkey to queue an item to "Now" or "Next" instead of having to drag an item from the end to the beginning.

Dragging items when you have 20+ items in the queue is so tedious (and the lagging UI doesn't help with that either), I can't remember how many times I told myself "why isn't there an option/hotkey to select an item which would be placed in the queue, right after the item currently being built".


That would be a really nice QoL feature as well ! +1 to the idea.

Endless Legend (and others, I'm sure) have three great hotkeys:

  1. Alt+Click: Start building this immediately
  2. Shift+Click: Start building this immediately in all cities.
  3. Ctrl+Click: Add this item to the end of the build queue in all cities.
It's particularly useful when you've researched a new technology that has immediate benefits in all/most of your cities, like (in HK), Public Fountain, Aqueduct, or Library or a new unit type.  Even if it's not useful in all cities, I find it more useful to queue everywhere and drop from a city or two, than go through steps of adding it to each city individually.

Very much agree !


It's been a while since I played EL, and didn't remember these hotkeys.


I can see how #1 and #3 would be very helpful in HK, less so with #2 though, since some infrastructures depends on terrain features/districts and adjacencies.


Any hotkey and a rework of the construction queue would be really welcomed. Fingers crossed !

So it's been a few weeks now that I'm using the "Reorganise by selection" setting (or whatever its name in english in game), for the construction queue.


I do feel it's actually easier to move items up or down the construction queue with this setting enabled. 


I'd like to suggest an alternative to my original proposition, since the way the queue works is that any item selected in the constructions panels will be queued at the end of the current queue.


Suggestion : when an item is selected, it remains above the queue, until you place it at a specific slot in the queue.

Example :


Justification : It would act like the "reorganise by selection", where you grab an item, and move it up or down, in the construction queue. The item would be placed in the queue by the player, in the position the player chose.

In case of an already long construction queue, the "unslotted" item would appear on the visible part of the construction queue (either beginning, middle, or end of the queue).


A unit has been selected in the Unit tab, it appears above the current construction queue, waiting the player to position it in the queue :


The player would then have to move first the construction queue scroll bar, in order to be able to place the item in the desired position.


In a city with a long construction queue, the player first move the queue to the desired position, then select the item in the related tab, and position it in the queue :


Notes :

It would probably need a sort of information/notification/feedback to remind the player to actively place the item in the queue, since currently, any movable item will be queued at the end of it when clicking out of the construction queue. Something like a red notification above the item : "move the item to place it in the queue".

This could be very helpful for districts/quarters specifically, since the player have to place their templates first on the map, before queueing them.
